Since adguard is already using the VPN to filter everything (I can see the VPN key icon in the status bar) do I need the DNS protection too? Or is that just overkill and it will destroy my battery?
The VPN icon is showing, when you are using adguard to block ads, too. It is done via a local VPN-server/tunnel/xyz on your phone.
To check if you are using AdGuard VPN you have to look inside the app.
Btw. VPN and Adblocking are completly different things.
To handle custom DNS filtering on iOS, the app needs to create a fake VPN. I will assume it’s the same on Android. Try it yourself: go ahead and disable the DNS filtering completely. Did the VPN icon go away? I will assume it did.
I can’t speak about Android directly, but on iOS, AdGuard can block ads inside Safari by using content blockers, so if you only enabled that, no VPN icon would show. That’s available in the free app too. But if you want blocking in other apps you will need to block them at the DNS level which is why it will create a fake VPN (to intercept all your traffic).
There is a way to block ads at DNS level without fake VPN, by using the free AdGuard public DNS settings, but that is not customizable.
Sorry guys, I am also a retard when it comes to comprehending any of this stuff. I noticed strange behavior when using DNS filtering on iOS. I believe AdGuard has a topic in regards to this issue. But again, the technical language is beyond me.
What DNS implementation and server settings should I pick?
And maybe someone explain DNS concepts in layman terms for retards like me? Duly appreciate it…much love!
Maybe a bit of a sidestep, but I can see the reason for OP’s question (although his reactions below are not very civilized).
Enabling AdguardVPN on the phone (mine is an iPhone) is creating a VPN profile, as it should. However, if you enable DNS protection in AdGuard Adblocker, a second VPN profile is created. Of course, you only can use one of them at the same time.
Does it make any difference which one of these two VPN’s you use? Or is it the best choice to use the VPN of AdGuardVPN? And if so, can you leave DNS protection in AdGuard Adblocker turned on and just ignore the corresponding VPN, or is het better to turn off DNS protection (and by doing so disable this VPN)?
I am not using adguard VPN. It’s telling me to “try it out” bit I don’t have it.
I’m simply blocking ads. With that VPN tunnel phone thing I guess, that shows a key icon at the top.
But I also have DNS filtering enabled. Do I need that enabled too?
Try it yourself: go ahead and disable the DNS filtering completely. Did the VPN icon go away? I will assume it did.
No it did not.
Which is why nobody here is making sense.
I am protected by adguard app with DNS on or Off.
And nobody will explain why I need DNS on.
The VPN incon is still intercepting traffic with DNS off.
Is there a customizable adguard DNS that you can pay for? Like NextDNS.
You can read about it at https://adguard.com/kb/adguard-for-ios/features/dns-protection/

Do you have AdGuard VPN enabled somehow?
Or are you on Android? Maybe on Android, since there is no Chrome equivalent (that I know of) to Safari’s native content-blockers, maybe the AdGuard version for Android can *only* filter ads via a false VPN.
