Background
YouTube recently rolled out messages that would show to users of AdBlockers.
These messages could be closed and just reminded users that AdBlockers were against TOS.
Then they added a short timer before being able to close the message.
Now, this is the final slap in the face from YouTube.
After the site detects your AdBlocker you will be allowed to watch 3 more videos before YouTube player is disabled. You will be unable to watch videos after this.
Affected Extensions and Browsers
Please comment to let me know if you extension is affected, it helps a ton!
On Mozilla Firefox
-AdBlock Plus
-Ublock Origin
Bypasses
You can still watch video previews (hovering over a video on your home page) and channel trailers (the video that pops up and automatically begins playing when you go to a channel).
You can also circumvent the block by allowing you AdBlock extension to run in incognito/private windows, and then opening the video you want to watch in incognito/private mode.
The former will most likely be fixed in the future.
What This Means
You can now be exposed to YouTube’s ads, which are notorious for being obscene, unmoderated, annoying, and even occasionally malicious.
This problem may be specific to one browser last thread on the topic I saw another user commented he was using Oprah browser and his was still working fine
As I write this, I’ve been permanently barred from watching any youtube videos due to my adblocker, which I am not removing. Within the message is says the reason they don’t want people using adblocker is because the “ads allow youtube to stay free for billions of users worldwide” which frankly speaking is the biggest pile of dino poop I’ve ever read in my life. They made 23 billion dollars in PROFIT in 2021 alone. Their execs all have 7-8 figure salaries. Meanwhile they want me who makes near minimum wage to fork over money so I don’t get ear slapped by a loud random commercial. Obvious money grab by a company that was given a monopoly in their space.
Chrome with both AdblockPlus and uBlock Origin here. No issues whatsoever, never even saw this message once. Could it be because german court repeatedly ruled that adblockers are not a problem?
Chrome with Ublock origin from the UK. I have never received any popups on ad blockers on YT. I hope if it does spread that the devs of ad blockers and filter lists will manage to bypass it.
If there’s no way to work around this, I’ll just quit using youtube altogether and spend more time on WoW instead. This isn’t 2005 anymore when Youtube was a new and exciting, no-alternative entertainment monopoly with nothing else to do on the web.
I won’t pay (ads or premium) out of principle due to how bad youtube has become lately with regards to content creators not being able to upload what they want. Example, LeafyIsHere got banned because some people didn’t like him, and not because he broke any specific rule (that are actually being upheld)
I use AdBlock on Chrome and have never received any sort of message like this ever. When they start cracking down, I guess I just won’t use it anymore. I supposed I’m not opposed to paying for the ad free tier, but honestly, I waste too much time on the platform and ad block removal may be my way out.
I’ve been using Vivaldi for a while now, which has built-in adblocker, and YT detected it, and even adding youtube to the exceptions won’t do anything, and now I might have to change browser altogether if I ever want to watch a video again… Seriously, Youtube is getting more insalubrious by the day, annoying and stupid. The worst part is there WILL be people defending this non-sense ugh
Another dumb anti-user move from YouTube. People will still surely find a workaround for this. If they are not shoving insane amount of ads to their users, for sure, a less amount of people will use adblock for their website.
