Good tip, thanks. I don’t think I tried many other Asian servers after I had such crappy results with HK, TW, SK, JP etc. Plus I like that the US servers keep Google services in English for me
Actually I game on the Vietnam server (CSGO competitive) and get consistently around 150-200 ms (better than average 200+ ms with 20% packet loss). I’ve also found the “China Telecom” server allows access to facebook youtube and runs at 1.5MB/sec consistently, even during peak hours when my DSL connection becomes crap.
Agreed, it’s been nearly 2 hours now. Everybody died. Either that or it was a vastly elaborate organ harvesting scam.
careful, hma logs your info and inspects packets.
Nothing to worry about.
Edit: more detail - Astrill only allows one connection at once without the home plan (I think they allow one computer and one mobile device simultaneously now, but I’m not sure since I use the home plan). If you try to log on another one, it’ll kick you off the old connection.
However, in the past I’ve seen this message pop up if I didn’t log off a device properly before logging back on. It’s not surprising at all that this message is popping up given the major server problems Astrill are having today.
I had this too. I only have Astrill on one computer and I didn’t give my password to anyone.
Honestly it’s been so long since I used any alternatives that I don’t really know. Back when I switched I’d had mediocre experiences with StrongVPN and ExpressVPN, but at the time Astrill was much better. Perhaps it’s time to crowdsource some alternatives, since today’s downtime could be the nail in the coffin for me.
I certainly think I’m going to stop giving out Astrill invites - it doesn’t feel right to be promoting a service that I no longer believe in.
Unfortunately we do not have an ETA when our service will be restored. Please check our Twitter and Facebook pages for updates.
That’s amazing.
I’m no rocket surgeon but it sounds like your saved password is wrong. Make sure the save password box is ticked when you enter the correct password. If that’s not it then something got a little messed up in the update, just uninstall/reinstall Astrill.
Also, if you have problems with Astrill, talk to Astrill. Not sure how I can make that any clearer. That problem has zero to do with being in Shanghai, it’s a technical issue/bug. Talk to Astrill.
>2 mB/sec
I think the poop stench clouded your vision.
It looks like it’s a service provider that’s gone down - the Zayo/Above.NET that’s suffering from major packet loss. That would explain why they weren’t expecting it and why it’s out of their control. I feel bad for them actually - I’ve been in that situation before where the entire multiplayer network goes down and all we can do is wait for someone else to fix it whilst constantly apologising for lack of online play.
you’re always defending astrill. always.
just an observation
The only major issue i’ve had (and it’s more of a minor inconvenience) is that i have to reset my DD-WRT router running Astrill about once a day. Which in the grand scheme of things is pretty minor all things considered… but your right. in 3+ years of using Astrill I’ve had only a handful of times i needed to contact them, whereas most of my friends not using astrill seem to have a problem every other week.
I’ve been using a Canada server of the CBC’s sweet olympic coverage. No complaints what so ever.
I’m not dealing drugs or doing anything illegal. Besides, they tell me that the only thing they log are the same things EVERY VPN PROVIDER logs as a function of the system. The “logs” are not kept, however, so there is nothing for any other entity to request/view should that ever arise.
ahhh gotcha. thank you for this
Just signed up for VyprVPN, seems alright so far. Their android app is very nice.
Thanks. I posted because I wanted to know whether it’s a unique case or something that has to do with the update. Saved password is right, hence the problem. But thanks anyway.
I somehow doubt it’s malevolent.
Site says they’re down for maintenance and they’ll be back ‘shortly’.
Guess we’ll see. I doubt they’ll be down long, though. Last time they went down they were DDOSed (can’t really blame them for that), and were down for fewer than 24 hours and fixed the vulnerability immediately.
I do agree that it’s a little suspect, if you’re a little paranoid - if they were actually down for maintenance, you’d have thought they would have sent out some kind of notification.
My thoughts go to you and your family during these testing times, and I’m sorry for the part I may have played in your loss. But let us not forget that it is when we are at our lowest ebb that our true humanity shines through.
27TH FEBRUARY 2014 - NEVER FORGET
I have an internet speed meter in the status bar that is pretty accurate - I was watching a YouTube video and it was streaming at around 2.1 MB/sec, and holding that speed. Lately it’s only been going as high as 1.6 MB/sec, that’s why I figured maybe Astrill had sorted their shit out. It seems that the exact opposite had happened
