Best way to simulate LAN online for gaming?

So I am trying to use Window’s VPN service to host a LAN connection online. Basically, I’d like to be able to play Spies v Mercs, but I need a LAN connection. Evolve was the way to do this, but I know that you can do it with any VPN service, and I know that windows has one. I feel like these are the steps

  1. Create limited access account on computer for people to log on to using this guide
  2. Have them connect to that VPN
  3. Run the game
  4. It should work now?

Any tips?

I’d just use Hamachi. It’s a VPN service specifically designed for what you’re describing.

I use a VPN system called SoftEther. It’s very customizable, however you need to run the server software on your own hardware.

Hamachi works too, but I don’t use it anymore because I’d rather have full control over the server.

You want to be connected to a VPN like OpenVPN and you can create a virtual network for all of you to connect.

It can get a little complicated, so keep in mind that you might have a ton of technical hurdles, but essentially each of you connects to a VPN instance, and you allow for each client to be able to communicate with each other.

For example, I rent a “droplet” on DigitalOcean, and I run PriTunl to manage all my client connections. You can even setup separate “networks” that allows your users to connect to different VPN instances, allowing you to have multiple “servers” to connect to each other on.

Keep in mind that PriTunl DOES consider you are running this with a good idea on how to manage OpenVPN, but feel free to ask for help by tagging me and I’d be happy to assist.

Once you’re all connected to this one instance, you should be able to ping each (considering you’ve allowed them on your personal computer firewall)

Good luck

Seconding hamachi. It works out of the box.
