College Wifi PS5 NAT Type Issue

Hi there,

I am a college student living in their dorms and using their wifi. The connection it fine, but my PS5 has a strict NAT type (type 3) and therefore I cannot even join a party with my brother at another university (he has type 2). I have tried port forwarding using my oen router and using uPnP, with no luck. Is there anything i can do to make the NAT type 1 or 2? Or a way where he could change his to 1? Im trying everything.

You’re router is almost certainly behind another college router, it may be impossible to get better NAT without a creative router-based VPN solution with which I have no PS experience

Does your school have a way to register gaming systems? A lot of them offer a portal where you can input the systems MAC address, and it will then place the console in a separate network that issues public IP addresses with open ports, allowing for NAT type 1 (which is technically no NAT). I’d check into that option with yours schools IT group.

Congratulations, you’ve discovered one of the many reasons why IPv4 and NAT sucks so bad.

You’re right! I’ve used this guy in the past for that exact situation. You do have to get pretty creative with the configuration.

Understandable, thanks. Ill see what others say

Ive asked, and they dont make exceptions unfortunately…

Well that’s not good. Seems like short sidedness for them not to offer a solution for gaming systems.
