Does having two routers slow down network speed?

For context, this is my setup:

I have to use the stock router as it’s the only device that connects to the phone line for internet.

I then have my Asus router connected to the stock router that goes 2 floors up so i get better connectivity and i prefer that router as i’m running a VPN on it.

On the stock router I have but the my asus router in the DMZ zone so I don’t have to port forward twice.

before anyone asks. No, I don’t want to use an extender as I like having my own network isolated. I also have a lot of internal servers that I don’t want any devices to see.

Will I see any signification slow down routing through the network?

Thanks.

Does it cause a slowdown, technically yes. Every hop will add a bit of latency. In your case you are talking in terms of microseconds. Which are smaller than milliseconds. So, no it shouldn’t be noticeable.

From the sounds of it, the only way to increase speed is to get rid of the DMZ and VPN or perhaps upgrade the router to a newer version with more processing power depending on what you have running.

Ultimately, by getting rid of the DMZ and fully optimizing the setup, you’re talking about a few milliseconds saved at best, and that’s being generous.

Why don’t you test it out? Compare the speeds of connecting to the first router then the second router.

Thanks. its just that i’m upgrading my broadband soon and would like the network to run as efficiently as it can.

Thanks though.
