Does Microsoft Teams shows your IP when you attend a meeting?

Hello,

For the context :

  • I am planning a trip soon
  • I don’t want people know that I am in Asia
  • Ideally, I want to change my IP, for that I will use a VPN

My questions are :

  • When you attend a meeting, does the people (host and guest) can see your IP and know where i am ?
  • Is it possible to modify the IP with teams ?

This post seems 100 percent counter to your last post

What’s the story here?

Admin can see where your account signed in from.

Depending where you are in Asia, there may be VPN restrictions:

Can you use a VPN in China in 2024? - Surfshark

Depending on your company what you are attempting to do is at best a beach of your contract, at worst illegal with severe fines or more.

If you know it is not permitted for you to do this under company policy it is gross misconduct and you will be fired.

You clearly haven’t thought this through and I would advise against it.

IT is going to see whatever IP your VPN is giving. What VPN are you using? I hope not a commercial one.

You should do some reading.

Do you have to MFA with your phone? Those locations are logged as well as your computer’s location.

Hey there! Microsoft Teams does not show your IP address to others in a meeting, so your location stays private. If you use a VPN, Teams will use the VPN’s IP, not your actual one, making it seem like you’re joining from the VPN’s location. This is a secure way to keep your whereabouts undisclosed while on Teams. Safe travels!

I just want to know if people can see my IP with teams

Host of the meeting you mean ?

If I use a VPN, he will see only the fake IP ?

Ok thanks for your comment

Thanks for the tuto.

I don’t really have time to buy and install this things because I go in a few days.

For the VPN, yeah I will use and pay for something commercial

Can you see people’s IP when you join a meeting?

What’s does “people” mean to you

You’re in the wrong forum. You want too talk with network people.

Also, nobody here wants to help you cheat a vacation during work. We’re not your hangover friends.

Your IP is logged, certain people can see it yes.

IT sees every authentication, login, etc to Azure. This includes all office apps including teams. If you use a VPN before opening any apps, you will only appear from that IP, that is unless of course your on wifi without VPN and log into your device that is Intune joined and on wifi and then connect the VPN, the IT person would see your Windows login as being in Asia and then switch to the VPN IP.

Meeting hosts cannot see your location or IP. Just IT in the background.

IT can know. The IP information from your computer, the SSID where you are connected, a lot of info in the Teams debug info from Admin. But IT needs to be explicitly looking for something …
I don’t know if a VPN will truly hide you. From the meeting organizer? Yeah probably will not figure out.

Prepare to get notified by IT, then. Most company IT departments will know when someone is using a commercial VPN and they will be alerted. Next time setup your own VPN at home so it keeps your home IP.
