Sba7 l fol ya shbab! My mom’s cancer has recently spread to her liver and I’m going home soon to be with her in the next therapy sessions. I’m going to be working remotely since I’m going to run out of vacation days.
My company uses Pulse Secure as their corporate VPN and I heard horror stories of it being blocked in Egypt. I wanted to ask if anyone has ever used this in Egypt and whether it works?
I’ve also been looking at VPN options and the tough part is I can’t install VPN on the work laptop because it already has a corporate VPN. I’ve heard the only option was to look at routers that can be setup with VPN but I don’t know if those kinds of routers are available in Egypt.
I apologize if my question is too technical! I’m really just desperate to find out since I haven’t seen many answers online
Update: So far everyone that uses Pulse Secure has confirmed it works okay which is great news! There’s also a lot of good ideas for alternatives just in case things go south. I wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to reply to me and thank you so much for the best wishes. Rabena y5lekom
Update 2: In case anyone faces the same issue, Pulse Secure works perfectly fine with zero issues. Thanks to everyone in this thread again!!
Sorry about your mom. I have been using WARP cloudflare VPN for a year now, so far it’s been reliable, but I am not sure if this gonna be suitable for your work. Hope this subreddit has a network engineer that can help you setup a router built-in VPN (if such thing does exist)
hey, there is an easy way to do it. but it would be kinda slow (well not as tor at least lol)
you have a phone? connect to any router (non vpn)
download a vpn on your phone, connect to it.
find wifi tethering (this allows your laptop to connect to your phone, n since the phone is routed through vpn, the lap wont bypass it and will also be routed through vpn)
which options to use to connect to the laptop:
you can use a usb, connect it to the laptop (for full speed with no loss or pkt losses) when you connect it, a network thing will pop up, asks you to allow it or not, select yes, and its gonna work.
option 2: your phone will be a hotspot, your laptop will connect to the phone’s wifi.
i recommend the usb tethering instead of the wifi thing.
you can as well use another laptop to do the same thing as it can make a hotspot or transfer internet through a usb (and also ofc an rj cable)
but everyone has a phone, so use the phone.
vpns:
1: proton vpn free plan
2: adguard vpn (3gb free, bypass this by making a new account, and its cheap if you wanna buy it)
3: calyx vpn (on f-droid)
4: riseup vpn (on f-droid)
this really doesn’t need more than 10 mins to setup, if you ever get stuck in anything, let me know im sure i can SAND HALP
____
also try it yourself rightnow, no need to blind trust me
I don’t have any answer as to the VPN, but it sounds like others do.
However, I’m so sorry to hear about Mom’s battle with cancer. You are a good son/daughter to be by her side when it counts. Praying for her speedy recovery Inshallah, and wishing you both all the best.
I use Pulse Secure in Egypt for my work in the US. No problem at all. It connects to your work server and the computer thinks you are where the server is.
Using the phone is a great idea I never actually thought of that! I have an iPhone do you know if the personal hotspot would route its traffic through the VPN app on the phone?
I read somewhere that iOS hotspots actually work in a bridged mode where the IPs you get are actually coming from the carrier.
My naive guess would be that the app would route iOS’ traffic but not necessarily the hotspot. This is one of those times I wish I had an Android phone! I’m curious what you think.
i dont know.
but i dont recommend hotspot in either android or ios. and if it doesn’t work as hotspot in ios, you can try the usb tethering.
but my guess is that ios wont allow external apps to bypass the vpn or connection. and the bridge first then the internet, so you are connected to bridge > internet > vpn
bypassing this is a software thing, i dont think ios would allow bypassing.
also let me know whatever the results are
