Download speeds while using vpn

I recently started using the paid version of protonvpn. For a couple days it worked really good but the last couple of days it slows down to almost nothing after about 20 minutes of uptime. I’ve changed the protocol, turned on VPN accelerator, etc. It keeps doing the same thing sadly. Is anyone else having this problem or ever had this problem? What did/can I do to fix it? I like it alot but if it’s going to do this for me I can’t see myself continuing to pay for it.

Please contact us through the ‘Report an issue’ option in the app menu and send us the error logs so we can investigate further and suggest troubleshooting tips. You can also consult our support article on increasing VPN speeds for suggestions: https://protonvpn.com/support/increase-vpn-speeds/

Just to eliminate the usual suspects; did you try different servers?

Use wireguard for speed and not openvpn protocol. I am using free version in some cases and I get almost 900mb om 1gb fiber. I have 2 other vpn and there the same result and sure it depends on ur usercase

My take 3 months in using Proton services.

Some background:

I gave up on browser extensions (tested with Brave and Chrome) because they do not work. So, I have been using the client now for over a month.

I have 1GB fiber that peaks at 950Mb up and down with under 10 ms latency.

Current state:

I find ProtonVPN slow. and clunky.

Typical day requires multiple reconnects as speeds become excessively slow for a variety of sites including Amazon, FB, among others. This, even though the load seems fine (below 60%)

The reconnects themselves can sometimes take up to 60 seconds for “quick connect”.
I rarely had any such problems with my previous supplier.

I recently switched to stealth mode hoping that it would remove some of the multitude of problems with various sites and apps ranging from Battle.net to Facebook. These issues include constant forgotten password through to timeouts. Not sure if this leads to additional latency as well… I suspect many companies do not like the ProtonVPN privacy protocols. (which I am fine with) But, I don’t want it impacting general service.

BTW, mobile seems much better/stable/faster. (Android) There seems to be an issue with Windows 11 PC client.

So, I can attest to the OP issues.

Speeds on apparently “Fastest”" (Speedtest.net)

PC: Download Mbps 284.37 Upload Mbps 76.49

Mobile: Download Mbps 24 Upload Mbps No tested.

This is less than half of what I got with competitor.

Yeah 2 or 3. All the same thing really. My speeds are pretty good I think 400 down 30-40 up. But I’m getting download speeds in the B/s range right now.

I’m glad someone else is having the same problems. I’m hoping they get everything ironed out I love the way it’s set up and the port forwarding. But if this keeps up I’m going to have to switch.

I gave up on browser extensions (tested with Brave and Chrome) because they do not work.

They certainly do, maybe not for you though. It’s how you split tunnel specific sites.

That’s weird. My paid ProtonVPN subscription recently expired, but even so, my speeds never differed that much. I also have a fiber 1gbps plan and peak at 950. Using a free server, I get around 700 mbps down and 240 up.

I am sorry for the detailed explanation backing my claims that resulted in thumbs down. I guess I don’t drink enough of the koolaid. If I just posted “hey this product is crap”., I get it. But, I have provided more than enough evidence to support my claim and support the OP. My best suggestion to Proton at this point is stop releasing new products that aren’t’ really necessary and fix both your pricing model and core products such as VPN, Pass, and storage.

And btw, the competitor which I won’t mention. 400mb pretty consistent. I have a business grade LAN comparable solution.

Had nothing to do with split tunnel. I’m quite familiar with split tunnel. I use it all the time on mobile and PC. extensions were continually dropping.

Proton support is who suggested using the thick client. I sent them plenty of screenshots of the problems.

I have little idea what you’re saying here, it looks like double speak. But you said the browser extensions don’t work, and me and everyone else who use them successfully and as intended disagree completely.
