Hi all, Im currently using AirVPN on a server close to me because of its port forwarding ability. The downside is that it heavily restricts my speeds compared to being off VPN. (gigabit when off and about 120megabit when on).
With black Friday deals coming up, I’m wondering if there are alternatives I should look at? I’m not expecting miracles but the current speeds are becoming an annoyance especially when trying to provide decent upload for seeding to private trackers.
Thanks in advance!
AirVPN has 20gbit servers and you need to enable Wireguard for max speed. 1gbit + openVPN is very slow on Air. Gigabit users are getting anywhere from 600 - 900 typically.
Are you even using wireguard? Cause openvpn will be slow on all of them in comparison. I haven’t noticed any difference in speed on/off vpn with them using wireguard, same for mullvad or windscribe.
I am getting 600+ mbps with airvpn (wireguard) using most of the european servers…
I don’t know where you live but in Europe, I’m able to have 1.5Gb from ProtonVPN out or my 2Gb connection
Stay with airvpn. The Port forwarding feature is awesome but if you really want to change vpns the try mullvad vpn
No, I am using the Eddie client, I’ll try swapping to Wire guard
I’m using the Eddie client so I’ll try swapping to wire guard
You do anything to reach those speeds? I’m limited to half my router’s full speed when using proton
Mullvad doesn’t have port forwarding anymore. Proton is very fast compared to AirVPN in my experience.
you can use wireguard in the eddie client choose wireguard
Have you checked CPU usage when speedtesting ?
Because wireguard is super fast but not hardware accelerated. My Nas with i5 8500T can’t do more than 1-1,1Gb and it takes 100% CPU to encode it all.
Only my main pc with R9 5900X can reach 1,4 to 1,5 out of 1,9.
Yea but it’s cheap and privacy focused
Thanks, I’m switching from my Windows IS to Ubuntu today, so I’ll definitely play around now that I know others are getting faster speeds than me.
Ahhh interesting, no I haven’t checked CPU usage. I’m still getting familiar with VPN functionalities, and I’ll be honest I need to read up on wireguard cuz I’m a little lost but yeah, my laptop isn’t very powerful so it would make sense that it isn’t able to grab the max speed that it can hit.
But misses the critical need to port forward so I can seed. So sadly not relevant, but was on my list until they announced no port forwarding anymore
I’m so glad you mentioned that. I was about to switch from Nord to Mullvad for the port forwarding feature. Bummer they don’t offer it anymore. I’ll give airvpn a shot.
any updates on how the switch went? I’m looking for port forwarding and currently have nord
I decided to go with AirVPN since they offered port forwarding. I’ve been very, very satisfied. It took me about 10-15 minutes to kinda wrap my head around their VPN client, setting up what protocol to use, port forwarding setup, and how to tie that in with qbtorrent. But they have a good how-to section out there.
And it’s been pretty reliable. I bought one month initially to test it out. Then every major holiday when it’s on sale, I extend it by buying more months’ worth of credits. That’s the key. Take advantage of the holiday sales. It’s pretty much on par with the cost of Nord.
I seed public torrents. So I like having a VPN with port forwarding.
If I was seeding on a private tracker exclusively, I’d prob just skip it and forward the ports on my router.
