Good free VPNs for the Steamdeck

I’m currently looking at using either TunnelBear or ProtonVPN. I’m rather new to the Linux scene.

Is there a better VPN I should be looking for? I’m only planning to use this for some schoolwork on the blocked wifi, so I don’t need super fast speed or anything. If TunnelBear or ProtonVPN are good enough, which one would you recommend?

Free VPNs are generally speaking not possible unless funded by something else. Often this is datacollection, but ProtonVPN just has higher prices for their paid tiers and are the recommended VPN for people in suppressed countries, and whistle blowers.

I personally use their paid tier, but their free tier works great for small things (I’ve connected using the free tier to an MC server that was giving me ping issues without VPN).

Tunnelbear has had some major controversies in the past, but I believe they are under new ownership so I can’t say much about that.

I can’t speak for free VPNs, but most will need some additional configuration as SteamOS doesn’t have the OpenVPN Plugin. Some more details here:

I use NordVPN to get around a block using this method.

I suggest you use low price paid vpn. for long term is PIA. for short term is Mullvad or ivpn.

I honestly just need it because I can’t use regular sites on school wifi, like YouTube or reddit. Thanks!

School networks tend to block the most crazy things like SSHing into a webserver or github. Does it matter why they need a VPN?

School wifi is shit and will block whatever, even something simple like YouTube. I just want to watch Markiplier, man

did you find any free vpn to bypass regular sites on School wifi?..for Browser you can use chrome Extension Vpn Proxy Master

Just curious. That’s all. There are legitimate reasons and illegitimate reasons.

I use proton VPN on my phone to bypass school wifi firewalls. I’ll check that out though!
