I use ICS and I’m in the market for a proxy/VPN–mainly for google music. DroidVPN seems good, except that tethering doesn’t work at all. (I don’t need to tether all the time, but if I’m going to pay for one proxy/VPN I want to make sure it’s the only one I’m going to need.)
What services do you use and like? Anybody get good results connecting your phone to a non-specific VPN like you would connect to with your computer?
Edit: I see DroidVPN also has no contact information on their web site, so I can’t ask them about tethering (or anything else). This is a small minus.
Edit: I ended up using my own server to set up OpenVPN. It was a bitch, so I made a brief writeup.
I’d recommend a DNS service instead of a VPN. I use www.unblock-us.com myself for Netflix and such. All you have to do is set a static IP address in the network setting and assign the DNS they give you (there’s tutorials so it’s very easy if you’re not familiar with this stuff). You don’t have to run an app and it doesn’t slow down your connection speeds. Also, you can try it for a week for free without registering.
I remember on a forum once someone used Orbot and made the exit node server come from the USA. Since using the Tor network is free, and you only need to do it to set it up once, this sounds better than a proxy/vpn. Orbot can route all of your traffic through the network once you turn it on. Then just turn it off (delete the app if you want to) once you’re finished. You do need root to use it though.
Hey! If you have DroidVPN installed - click on Menu > Help. It says you can use the forum or contact them at [email protected]
I was pretty hesitant to buy a subscription, but I ended up dropping $5 for 1 month. It came in handy last week when I was traveling to NYC! The hotel had no free Wifi, and I wasn’t about to drop $$ just to check my email and look up google maps while in my room.
Used DroidVPN ICMP protocol and was able to connect to the open network It also comes in handy for VOIP or what not… in public libraries and free fast food WiFis.
Thanks. But I couldn’t play any music without the VPN. It just says “Couldn’t play the stream you requested.” I have no success at all without the VPN. Are you sure this works?
Ha I know my post sounds like a sales pitch. so i should add - i wasn’t able to upload any photos to FB. Had problems sending attachments - but I mean it was just tunneling through some open port in the connection.
Hmm… with my version of Google Music in my country, a VPN is definitely required. It will still try to stream music, but nothing comes through. Music that’s been cached will play fine, though.
Do you have any idea whether hideipvpn works through the great firewall of china? I travel there sometimes, and they’re generally hostile to VPNs.
Those VPN prices are crazy! You can set up OpenVPN on a 128mb OpenVZ or KVM VPS no problem. If you know your way around a shell, I recommend checking out LowEndBox it’s a blog and there’s a forum community LowEndTalk that is centered around low memory VPSes, a lot of Chinese set up VPNs on VPSes in LA to get around the great firewall.
I’m in the states, and a couple of days ago mine was clocking just like you describe. Cleared the cache, uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted a couple of times, and it sprang back to life.
Might be worth a shot. Your location maybe just coincidence.
I actually tried something like that. I’ll send you that PM because I’d really love some help, as I’m at my wit’s end. I can’t even manage to connect to somebody else’s PPTP (standard) VPN.
