Hello, I was wondering if it’s by the rules of hetzner to host an OpenVPN server on a cloud instance.
u can host openvpn or wireguard on hetzner vm. no issues.
For personal use = no problem
as some public VPN = problem
Do you want to use this VPN to access the internet? I tried it once and ran into an problem. Some websites recognize the static Hetzner IPs as not trustworthy and you have to do a captcha challenge before you can access the site. I think thats a kind of DoS protection or bot protection.
Never had an issue. I use openvpn for my personal use.
For personal use, it’s fine. For professional use I’d look into wireguard first
TBH you can get a good VPN service like Proton VPN for around the same price of a small VPS and y the best part is that you can select far more locations.
I personally had issues before. Using Wireguard for a VPN resulted in me being unable to access Google etc
Some Hetzner IPs do get “flagged” and banned by the likes of Google. Not your fault, just at some stage your IP has been flagged and blacklisted. It’s annoying, but getting a new IP address could fix it.
Assuming you’re using IPv4 that is.
That’s what I did since, hmm I don’t know when, 2017ish? But for personal only, like for login to another server using whitelist IP.
For VPN I would recommend Mullvad
Been using StrongSwan since 2010!!! but site-to-site only for corporate use.
Yup, do not sell it. When the first computer with a virus comes up on the VPN, Hetzner will send a “red” warning.
Yup, some companies like Mailgun and AWS SES have blacklisted some of Hetzner’s IPs.
I was forced to change my email service to Mailer Send when I migrated from Digital Ocean to Hetzner.
Yup, had a client on another provider think it would be a good idea to turn one of our VPS into a tor exit node as it was sitting idle!
Within 12 hours we had an inbox of complaints and our ISP threatening us!
