Hi, so basically I’m travelling to Dubai but I still want to use Discord to run my server and talk in Discord. How risky would it be. I just want to use VPN while connected to public WiFi.
Risky makes it sound like you run some shady kinda server.
Anyway when you use a VPN the wifi owner cannot see that you’re using discord, nor can the internet service provider or anyone else peering in. All they see is that you are connected to a VPN.
In other words, they won’t know that you use discord unless they look at your screen.
You might want to ask people who live there instead of asking here, I’m pretty sure there are laws against using VPNs.
I don’t know if Discord or VPNs are banned in Dubai, but if the latter is true, one could theoretically consider using a self-hosted VPN because the network provider could have a list of well known VPN IPs. Of course, I don’t encourage possibly illegal behavior so you should consider giving up Discord for the duration of your stay. I would not ask locals about illegal stuff like the other comment suggests.
My comment disappeared but if there are laws against VPN/Discord (as other comments say), you probably should not risk it.
TECHNICALLY, a self-hosted VPN’s IP wouldn’t be known by the ISP, but that doesn’t guarantee anything…
Nah, I run a PC server that’s all. But that’s for the answer.
