How safe if torrenting weekly anime releases in Singapore

I’m gonna be moving to Singapore in 2 weeks. My current set-up is I use a raspberry pi as a media server that has a torrenting client and an rss feed of all the shows I watch. It downloads the episodes as they get released and I can stream them on any device in my home network using jellyfin. Currently I don’t know much about how strict Singapore is when it comes to torrenting. Since I torrent quite a lot, I’m worried that the volume would get picked up. I also don’t use VPN right now cause my current home country doesn’t care about torrenting. What would you guys recommend I do? Should I continue my set-up or should I go back to streaming on sites? And if I can continue my setup, do you recommend I get a VPN or is it unnecessary in Singapore?

First of all, check with your new ISP in Singapore if they have any cap for usage. Where I’m from they even cancel your service if you use it as a server or reach 2T download+ upload in a certain period of time. Second, even if yours don’t have that , get a paid vpn, yes, they are expensive but offer real privacy, not the likes of McAfee for example with saves your stuff on their server. Get one that encrypts all the data you send them. Nowadays surfing the net or giving opinions without a vpn is worse than surfing random sites without an antivirus back in the 90’s

Just my 2 cents as a Singaporean here. I have been torrenting anime but not so much to the extent of the terabytes.

Haven’t had any issues with it really, didn’t get any warnings whatsoever, let alone copyright strikes or any of that sort. To be honest, I never use a VPN as well oops. Didn’t realise that was a thing.

I won’t say singapore is very strict on this but I will use VPN to be safe.

So far the only case I heard is a anime distributor call odex sending lawyer letter to offender. Most either pay the fine or ignore it.

Everybody has pretty much given solid advice.

So I’ll just say, beware the xedo

If you don’t know, get a VPN. As long as they are legal in your country.

question why do you go through all this hassle when you can watch on 9anime for example? I’m sure there’s benefits to this, can you enlighten me?

I’ve been torrenting weekly anime releases for 15 years without a vpn. Not a single time did i get a copyright letter from my isp. For comparison, i torrented a popular AAA game and right away got a notice from my isp.

I wouldnt risk it. Singapore even issues 10 years of jailtime for something minor like possessing weed, so I imagine you’d get tortured to death over stealing cartoons

Why would you torrent anime… Go to 9anime.to

Torrenting was never safe

The enforcement of piracy laws are often reactionary. Barring any aggregious criminal activity, the isps themselves won’t bother you.

So it takes a commercial entity, just not the isp to come after you.

Previous redditors probably weren’t born yet or too young to remember🤣 but action had been taken before like a bolt from the blue.

Read the above article. It did scatter all the monkeys for a time.

They still seem to be in business. Though there haven’t been any publicized cases since. Who knows, perhaps they’re still in the shadows logging trackers.

Odex were the licence holders but they were acting on behalf of the copyright holders. It probably won’t happen again because the litigation cost more than 5 times the monies collected. But who knows?

Why do people still bother torrenting anime though? There used to be only 1 or 2 stream sources at 480p or less. Today you get full HD streams. Unless your source has lossless audio and you’re using decent sound equipment, I’m not quite seeing the need to torrent. You could just download it from the stream if you wish to watch offline while in transit. At least that’s a legal grey than outright downloading from torrent.

Do you still torrent anime? What VPN do you recommend? I thought of getting something like surfshark but mullvad seems good too.

If you have the actual file you can stream it to your console/smart tv/Roku etc so you can watch on your TV. I use Plex for that.

The biggest reasons are I like having my own copies, don’t wanna get viruses so downloading in a box and steaming to my devices is safer, and at one point I got sick of buffering

along with what everyone else said, you can get higher quality, since sites like 9anime will compress the videos to save money on bandwith

Just for clarification, you’re from Singapore right? I’m asking specifically for there cause I don’t know the pirating scene and what I can get away with. If you are though, that’s great

Back to streaming sites I guess

Yes. I only torrent anime and live action. I use Nord VPN. Just don’t expect the same speeds using a vpn and without. I can live with that having a little more privacy.

I recommend Mullvad. No personal info is needed to register and excellent DL/UL speed with no problems with torrenting.
