TL;DR : want to bypass wifi firewall restrictions that block vpn and online game without having to use mobile data or pay for a separate wifi box.
I just moved to the dorms in my new college a few weeks ago and I’ve noticed that the Wi-Fi here has a firewall that restricts online games, whatsapp, alot of random websites used for research (not talking about adult ones), VPNs and much more…
Now before you hit me with the focus on your studies cliché, don’t worry I know how to control myself and these restrictions are something I can live with, I’m just looking if there’s any possible solution I’m missing.
I know about mobile data, but I do use alot of internet mainly watching netflix and youtube on HD and playing games so it’d burn out pretty quickly and I’m pretty tight with funds, so paying like 100dhs a week for internet isn’t the smartest for me.
I also know about the mobile data monthly subscription, but again it’s pretty expensive and I don’t think even that would be enough to last me a whole month
(I checked my Wi-Fi usage for last month and it was around 180gb, considering I don’t have as much free time, I would cut that to 80-100, the maximum plan is 70gb for 400+ dhs)
If the system is set up correctly, you’re out of luck. From least competent to most:
- they may be using a blackhole DNS, this can be circumvented using a third party DNS like cloudflare’s if the firewall allows UDP 53 to other destinations.
- they may be using a ‘dumb’ firewall and you may be able to create a VPN tunnel through commonly open ports like 80 or 443 (somebody suggested ultrasurf, it does something like this).
- they may be using advanced deep packet inspection and other means to monitor and block traffic in which case you’re sol.
Check if changing the DNS helps to bypass anything. If it’s just that then it’s an easy adjustment.
Will look a solution for you, remember having something similar before. At least you know your uni is a decent one having some good tech guys
Edit: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/how-to-enable-dns-over-https-doh-in-windows-10/. Try that, if not. Lemme know to look deeper
for browsing you can use an http proxy. You can set up that on your browser setttings. just search for “free http proxy” try 10 of them and you’ll find some that suit you. You can also buy a router(only router, not router+modem combo), connect it through ethernet and forward all port number until you find some point that will suit you
I’ve been trying for the last 3 weeks to find a solution and I’ve tried everything from VPNs, messing with DNS settings to even going up to the admnistration and asking them about firewall restrictions but nothing really worked out.
I guess I will just settle for a normal Mobile Data Subscription and use hotspot to play games on my laptop, but I don’t know what subscription to go for though.
I will strictly use it for whatsapp chatting, discord calls and online games.
I’ve done some research on data consumption and I think anything over 20 Go will be enough for me but I haven’t tested yet.
If there’s any subscription that comes to mind that you could recommend I’ll be more than happy to hear you out.
Thanks in advance!
Tried it, everything is still blocked
Yeah, I’ve been doing some research and I’n really tempted to go for mobile data strictly for games and use the Wi-Fi for other data-consuming tasks.
Conveniently enough, I was just about to make a post about what mobile data subscription is the best and I had alot of questions considering the matter.
Sorry, don’t live there
but from what you’re saying, you shouldn’t need much data (assuming the calls are voice calls only). Set up windows to label your hotspot connection as a metered connection to avoid system services from hitting it up.
I mainly play games on my laptop. (League of legends, rocket league, steam games, etc…) and I’d also use it for whatsapp chatting and discord calls
I have the games already downloaded on my laptop before I moved and I have tried playing/update but nothing happens.
Haven’t really tried ultrashark but I’m not gonna get my hopes up.
I can probably make due by updating on admnistration Wi-Fi that is accessed from the library but for big scale downloads I don’t I’ll get away with it.
