How to change public IP Address?

My ISP is Xfinity. Im trying to figure out how to change my public IP or spoof it. I got a 20 dollar router to try and do that from walmart that was wifi 5. My actual wifi is 6e. Either the way after messing around with it I ended up looking up “what is my IP”. And found my IP was different, now I still need actual wifi wireless signal around the house so I picked up a wifi 6 router, wifi works and works like its supposed to. I’ve tried changing its mac address and I cant seem to figure out how to change the IP on this router, it worked on the Walmart cheapo so I dont know why its not working on this other one. Any help is appreciated and thanks!

You don’t. Your ISP gives you an IP address and that’s what you get. They own the IP address. You do not.

You can try to ask nicely for a new IP address by e.g. spoofing your MAC address, or telling your router to forget all previous DHCP settings, or even just turning off your router or modem for a while. But none of these will force the ISP to give you a new IP address.

A VPN will give you a different IP address which is kind of like spoofing, but generally, most ISPs and VPN providers will not permit you to actually spoof your IP address, because there’s really no legitimate use case for such a thing other than DDoS attacks.

Just change the IP? Usually changing the Mac on your router is enough. Or even just rebooting the router for some.

You can’t choose your public IP. That’s issued to you by the ISP as they actually own the addresses. You can sometimes pay extra to ha e a Static IP, but most ISPs don’t offer that for residential plans.

From your post, I don’t understand why you need a different public IP?

So how did a 20 dollar router from walmart change my public IP but this other one I bought doesnt? I dont get it.

Ask Comcast if you want technical details, but basically, they aren’t obligated to give you a different IP and they also aren’t obligated to give you the same IP. Most routers, if you disconnect then reconnect them, will ask the ISP to give the same IP they had before, but the ISP doesn’t have to respect that. If you connect a totally new router, it will ask the ISP for whatever IP it has available–sometimes, the ISP will give you your old one back and sometimes give you a different one.

What most likely happened is that your original IP got taken by someone else while your Walmart router was plugged in, and was given back to you just by chance when your Best Buy router was plugged in.

Because it has a different MAC address than your existing router, so it got a different IP.

Every ISP is different; with my ISP, my external IP won’t change unless they replace the router.

Hey man, either way thanks. Though I may or may not of found the issue out from another comment, when I enabled bridge mode I didnt yet plug the router in and actually unplugged the main one meaning bridge mode didnt actually complete. So as I thought it was enabled it wasnt, it was disabled, thats why. Either way thanks for at least trying to help!

Ok, and I got ANOTHER router to add onto my current one thats wifi 6, so it actually works with normal wifi. And the IP isnt changing, so once again Im not understanding?

I’m not understanding what you mean by “add on.” Which router is actually connected to the ISP?

so my ISP is comcast/xfinity. They give us a a device thats both a modem and a router and I can use bridge mode to still use the modem part but use the router on a different router if that makes sense. I connected a router from Walmart for 20 bucks that was wifi 5 not 6 just to test the IP part with ethernet. Have having bridge mode activated and troubleshooting I got the router working and was connected to THE WALMART router, and then the Walmart router was connected to the xfinity modem/router. After finally with that i went to what is my IP, and it showed up as a different public IP. so earlier today I went to best buy and picked up a wifi 6 router so the actual wifi worked and not just ethernet. After more troubleshooting I got it setup. But when looking at what is my IP it showed up as my very first original IP that I was trying to change, so now Im here asking how to get it fixed. This was when I was connected to the router from best buy, and I currently am still connected to the best buy router, and that best buy router is connected to the xfinity modem/router thing with bridge mode enabled.

Ah, ok. In that case, I have no idea, sorry.

It sounds like the modem/router device may no longer be in bridge mode.

Hey man call me stupid because guess what, you have officially been the one to call me stupid as bridge mode didnt actualyl enable due to the internet being off  . Thanks.

I didn’t call you stupid. I suggested a scenario which would be a likely explanation for acquiring the same IP.

That’s not the best way to respond to people when asking for their help, so you may kindly piss off.

no no no I meant that in a joking matter. because I completely didnt think of going to the gateway and making sure it was enabled, sorry you took it the wrong way.

Ah. Sometimes it doesn’t translate well in text form. Was bridge mode actually the problem then?

yes it was, its now working the way I wanted it to. thanks!
