How to make a phone hotspot look like a home network?

Hi all,

I have a remote working job which (needlessly) restricts me to working in my own country and a home network. But my dream is to travel to different countries using this job to fund it.

I was wondering is there a way I can mask a hotspot (or foreign WiFi) to look like a home network coming from my home country. Is just using a VPN on my phone (with a static IP?) good enough or would I need something more elaborate.

I am aware of the risks and this plan is not due to start until the summer anyway.

Thanks for any wifi wisdom  cheers!

You’ll have to try it on the phone in question if you want to use the phone as hotspot and running vpn. Some phones will not use vpn even if it’s turned on for a hotspot.

I don’t see why you’ll need a fixed ip. Not all home internet has a fixed IP.

A VPN should do it. Your employer may see that traffic so coming from a VPN provider. A more elaborate setup is to run your own VPN server or use a cloud provider and run you own VPN.

Edit: if your employer is using VPN for remote work, you may also run into issues if you need to run multiple VPNs on the same device. Yoy can get around this by, for example, running the vpn client on your router.

“Looking like a home network” is not really a thing. The other end can know if the IP address belongs to a particular service provider, but that’s about the extent of it.

Yeah, you don’t want to connect to work VPN through another VPN, that would not only be completely pointless, but also prone to several connection difficulties, and significantly reduced performance.
