I originally got an NA account, but now I live in Korea. FFXIV is not really popular in Korea although it’s released here. I want to play with the English-speaking community on Tonberry (JP), but even though I use a VPN from Korea, I’m unable to connect.
When I went to the account page to pay for my sub with a timecard, it works, though. I just can’t log in to the game. I saw the type of error I was getting was due to using a VPN.
Any ideas about how I can play on Tonberry from Korea?
Heya I’m here in Korea also. I have to use a vpn I use mudfish. It does have to be configured right to work or else you still hit the region lock. I set my target vpn server using it to either japan or a NA server. Feel free to pm me if you have questions. I can help you get setup. (Though I still play on NA servers)
Could try a different VPN. Are you using a paid one or free one? The free ones are almost always detected easily.
I use NordVPN paid service, which is pretty cheap, they don’t log connections, and I’ve almost never had it detected.
There is a region lock now ? I used to play on tonbery from france without problems

Are you able to login but get disconnected after you start playing? I know some US military guys that were stationed in Korea and had the same issue. They said to login with the VPN first then disconnect. They also said to use your phone’s data instead of cable/fiber internet to bypass the Japan IP ban if you still had trouble.

I live in Korea too and login through a free vpn set to Japan to play on Tonberry.
It’s pretty easy to bypass. One thing to note is it’s just the login screen you have to get through. Once the game is loaded you can disconnect the vpn if you want, although I find routing through a Japanese server reduces my latency a bit.
Also, it’s just KT that has it blocked I think, so if your phone is LG or SK you can just hotspot from your phone to login 
If you’re still having troubles lemee know and I’ll look up the name of the vpn I use.
EDIT: I see you didn’t have trouble with the subbing process… just actually playing the game… so below won’t apply to you but I’ll leave it anyone incase someone with a similar problem comes across this post.
Here’s what I know from using a NA Account from JP (may or may not be different from KR).
When you Re-Sub: The payment gateway looks hard at your IP. Doesn’t matter if your Credit card is from NA and all your registered info is all NA based… I always need to RDP into a US based PC and log in from a browser on that remote PC in order to handle the re-sub. (Luckily my job gives me access to PCc/Servers all over the world).
AFTER re-sub: They don’t check anything anymore. Monthly charges will occur without problem. You can purchase things on MogStation no problem. I’m even using a JP Debit card to pay for my NA sub. The key is just to get that resub process finished while on a machine with a US IP. They do seem to be very good at identifying VPNs and other trickery.
If you have no way to get into an NA PC, call up a friend and go through the process in real-time with him… You’ll need to trust him with your CC info and give the one password quickly, but it should work if you have no other options.
