The wifi is pretty good tbh. When it works, it gets the job done and then some. Goes down every now and then but Purdue just redid all of the connections in the res halls and are working on campus afaik.
Also, the ethernet RIPS. I had some ungodly download speeds in the dorms. Like downloaded GTA V, an 80 something gb game, in 15 minutes type of rips. Use the ethernet, especially for zoom calls and stuff like that.
look at the cover photo for the subreddit
WiFi at the dorms is good for the most part. I’d also suggest getting an Ethernet cable for your primary computer for when you’re studying (or gaming) in the room as it’s the most reliable connection.
it’s really good, nothing to worry about. can be spotty occasionally, but nothing too bad
when i was playing league on ethernet i only had 3ms ping lol
I found this piece on the exponent website
Decent, but plan on Ethernet when exam times come around and everyone is using it
It’s good for a nice school curriculum. But if you wanna game or something, use an Ethernet. That shit will get you where you need to go so quick
The wifi is decent, and fast with ethernet in the dorms. BUT, the wifi is somehow insanely slow in Lawson basements. Yes, the CS labs has the slowest wifi and i have no idea why they hadn’t fixed it.
Per this link, all of the APs in the dorms should have been upgraded by now, or at least will have been upgraded by the time the fall semester starts. Wi-Fi was fine before, but it should great now. Ethernet always wins, though.
A few years ago it was hot garbage but there seems to be a push with the new CIO to finally spend some money and fix a lot of the issues. (See also: a new single sign on system that doesn’t use the dumb PIN,push as passwords)
But yeah, bring an Ethernet cable too. I think all the dorms have gigabit connections in the rooms and a lot of the campus core is at least 10GB now.
From my experience, the wifi is not GODAWFUL. However, do be warned in some places like the basement of Knoy, if you sit by the window in the Mullins Reading Room in the WALC, or any of the buildings on the outside of campus the wifi there can be a pain in the ass at times. But the wifi is good enough to do things, just it could be improved especially in the buildings on the outskirts of basements and the basement of Knoy.
Also in order to prevent internet slowdown, in academic buildings certain sites/apps are blocked to ensure enough bandwidth for learning. From what I know, those sites/apps include Spotify, Apple Music/App Store, among others. Also, throw in TikTok it is blocked EVERYWHERE on campus. In the dorms nothing is blocked outside of TikTok. Hope that helps!
NOTE: to bypass the app bans get a VPN. I would recommend 1.1.1.1 by Cloudflare WARP it is free and easy to use. You can install it on MacOS, Windows, Android, and iOS.
Check the cover photo of the r/Purdue
As someone who came from a house with less then 1mb/sec I can say it’s certainly better then that.
where can i connect my ethenret cable to?? is there like a router in the room or can i just connect it to the wall?
We are currently doing a detailed survey of the residences with an aim to identify dead spots and check coverage. if there is a coverage problem then we will work to fix them as soon as possible. The supply-chain in network equipment has really eased which is why we got two years of orders in one month for the residences and did them all in one chunk at the start of 2023!
Ya same I always had single digit ping. It’s more likely because the league servers are in Chicago
when tuition is frozen we only have so much money to spend each year. The campus is now on a 5-year rolling replacement. Our current schedule is here: https://it.purdue.edu/telecommunications/rollout/academic-campus.php
as we plan the start in a building it gets added to the list, so it looks like PMU and stewart are getting started real soon.

the only AP not replaced are in locked locations that it seems nobody has the key for (or someone has damaged the lock). working on fixing them ASAP.
