I waited 9 hours to download a 100GB game, any fixes?

I waited 9 hours to download MK11, my internet is 1gb/s both download and upload, the drive I used is a Western Digital 2TB SATA SSD (WDS200T2G0A), Ive tried restarting my router, my pc, tried updating firmware, tried a different sata cable and a different sata port, same results. The download starts out fine at over 100mb/s then 2-3 minutes in it plummets to 500kb/s-2mb/s, after 5-8 minutes in jumps back to 100mb/s for maybe 10-20 seconds, it repeats this cycle until the game/file is finished. CrystalMark says the ssd gets around 385mb/s write speeds, the ssd itself is rated at 400 so that checks out considering its a few years old, what could be causing this problem?

It sounds like a network issue, not your hardware.

  1. Try a VPN. The CDN delivering the content from the nearest PoP could be taking a shit. Use different VPN locations next closest to your own location.

  2. Open windows resource monitor and switch to the networking tab. Keep an eye on it.

CPU? Steam compresses the download and it has to be unzipped on the fly and gets cpu limited quickly… even more so if you are doing something seriously cpu bound or allocated all your RAM

also what router do you use, and what are your actual internet speeds. Your network cable could be damaged as well causing issues. You could also have an older router that is misconfigured or unable to cope with sustained speeds but anything in the last 20 years should handle that fine, so I doubt thats the issue, but asking just in case

If your pc is using wifi, well thats probably the issue,

It could simply be that the website you’re downloading from is slow.

Try using steam settings to limit the speed to something like 50mb/s? I’m wondering if your router may be overheating.

It is your SSD. It is a DRAM-less TLC drive. What you are seeing is the small SLC cache area filling up, that is when you get full speed, then when the SLC cache is full the speed drops to nothing while the cache is written to the TLC. Once the cache is empty again, the speeds go back up. Rince and repeat.

Those WD Green drives are notorious for this behavior.

1)dramless ssd sata against 100 gb installation… cache filled ssd slow down

2)ssd overheating? it a possibility but probably it s (1) point

couldnt be an internet problem since i just tried installing a 20 gig game on another ssd (m.2 this time) and it downloaded it with constant speeds in maybe 5-7 minutes. Also transfer speeds have the same problem

13900kf with 64gb ram @ 5600

nope, its steam and every launcher behaves the same way, even regular large downloads from google

The router being the issue was my second assumption…

OP if you were downloading games before without issue, you could just be getting rate limited or downloading during peak usage, tho if you have fiber you should have a dedicated line so that shouldnt matter
