I want to add a VPN to my TV setup

I have a Shaw blue curve modem in bridge mode. Apparently it needs to be in bridge mode so that I can use my Google wifi network! If that makes sense?
Now I want to add a VPN to my house, or at least my TV. And I just discovered that I am not able to add a VPN to my BlueCurve modem.

Can anyone suggest a solution to my web of confusion. Essentially I just want to watch my overseas shows on my nice big Roku TV using a VPN.

Thanks in advance.

If your modem is in bridge mode you’d be setting the VPN on the google device acting as your router or the device accessing content.

A piracy sub would be your best source for info, though a Roku or Google sub may offer general VPN options.

Depending on how technical you want to get it can be easy or difficult.

You need to bridge your modem, and possibly disassasemble it to disconnect the wifi antennas, as even in bridge mode it doesn’t stop broadcasting wifi signal and can interfere with your wifi from your controlled devices.

You will need a VPN client compatible router, preferable a WRT capable one, so you can use it a client to access the VPN service you want. Some of the better ones will allow for split tunneling which means you can control which devices go to the VPN and which ones go to the WAN. Depending on the model/brand you should be able to get detailed support on their knowledge base or sub reddit.

If you want to get more detailed and control orientated, you could build yourself a PFSense, or other FOSS Firewall box, and use it as the VPN Client, behind the modem but in front of your existing Google Wifi mesh; which will not support a VPN client.

Yes as the google wifi network is an extension to the blue curve network so yes it needs to be in bridge mode so you can use your own router . not sure what your understanding you have as to what function the shaw modem does.
if you are ok to use the features of the shaw blue curve modem without adding your own router then everything is controlled on the shaw modem. once you choose to use your own router and then use the shaw blue curve to connect to the internet service then yes bridge mode makes full sense . all features are now controlled on your extension router .

How does bridge mode work?

If you use a third party router in addition to your Shaw modem, you may experience complications with your Internet service. This is referred to as Double NAT (Network Address Translation).

You can resolve the problem of Double NAT by setting your modem to Bridge Mode. This will cause your modem to stop acting as a Wireless Modem and router, and instead, it will act simply as a pass-through modem.

Once in Bridge Mode, you will not be able to use the wireless features of the Shaw Modem, and you will only be able to use as many Ethernet ports on the back of the modem as you have IP’s registered to your device. Typically this means you will only be able to use one or two Ethernet ports simultaneously.

Your modem in bridge mode means it is no longer acting as a router and is passing the internet connection directly to what you plug into it. Plugging end user devices directly into your modem when it is in bridge mode is not advisable, as they will receive a public Internet IP address and not have protections afforded by a router/firewall.

Ideally you would pulg your own router into the first port on the modem and then plug other devices into that new router or connect wirelessly to that new router.

If your new router does not have VPN capabilities, you can look for one that does. They exist and are readily available at most computer stores.

We can no help advise watch show not available in country.

This is piracy. Theft content. Deprive right holder of money.

Violate Reddit term service. Jail. Directly go to. Right away.

What is a piracy sub?

no need to disable anything when the modem is in bridge mode . and any disassembly of the shaw modem equipment is incomplete violation of owner ship .

You can use tools like inSSIDer to find that even in bridge mode the modem is still blasting out hidden WiFi signals, those hidden signals are strong enough to interfere with a set up and controlled router WiFi system, it is not a double NAT when the modem is bridged.

Maybe if ISPs offered dumb modems instead of features they do not support, then people will not encounter issues that the ISP support doesn’t understand.
