Idle Google Search tabs are using all of my CPU on Edge

For some reason, since a few weeks ago my CPU usage has been going crazy *only* in Edge. At first I thought it could be the adblocker I use (uBlock), but I disabled it and the CPU usage is still the same. This only happens with Google Search tabs and even Edge tells me about it and recommends me to close these tabs. Each tab usually uses like 100% of the CPU or even more, which probably means it’s using more than one core.

This issue ONLY happens with Edge, I tried the same with Firefox and Chrome, with the exact same tabs, and no adblockers, and my CPU usage stays at 0%.

My CPU is an Intel(R) Core™ i5-6600 CPU @ 3.30GHz, and I have 16GB RAM DDR4. I’m using the last Windows 10 Pro version (22H2), I have no updates pending, and I’m using the Edge version 122.0.2365.52, which released 5 days ago.

The CPU issue only happens with Google, even when I play videogames my CPU usage isn’t that high.

Here are some screenshots showing the CPU usage compared in different browsers:

Does anyone know what the cause could be and how could I fix it?

Exactly the same thing is happening to me! I have also created a post here but no results. Please let us know if you find a fix (I will as well).

same happening with chrome too

I tried to replicate your issue, it did not happen to mine. The google search tab is working normaly with small amount of CPU usage. Tried to upate your browser or restart your PC, or maybe it is a ISP problem.

For sure. I tried writing some tweets to the Edge official account but nothing so far. I’ll wait but I suppose we could also make a post in Microsoft’s community forum because this has been an issue for like a month and it doesn’t seem like they are even aware of the bug yet.

Hey! Thanks for trying to help. Although I had already tried all of those things before the post. But I’m curious, how could it be an ISP problem if they don’t have anything to do with my CPU usage though?

Hey!

Got an update.

So I’ve conducted an experiment: I disabled all my extensions and noticed that the problem had disappeared. Then I kept turning them on one by one to see which caused the trouble. It appears to be Urban VPN.

Hope it helps.

Woaaah, really? I also had Urban VPN installed… I feel so dumb now for not trying to disable Urban VPN, but I didn’t think an extension I wasn’t even using (I never use it, I installed several months ago and only used it once) could use all of my CPU. Thanks for telling me because this was driving me crazy.

That was the case for me too. Sometimes a new google tab awakened 5 other ‘sleeping’ google tabs and they drove the CPU to 80% for a good 2 minutes.

Disabling Urban VPN actually helped. However, I haven’t used it for months now.

Thanks, I had the same problem and it disappeared when I disabled Urban VPN.
