I have protonVPN, but also set up a VPN on my router. My question is: can I replace protonVPN with the VPN in my router?
If I connect to the VPN on my router (whether inside or outside my router’s network), is my traffic still encrypted and private?
if you have a vpn running on your router, then all connected devices will be accessing the internet through the tunnel on that router. that being said, i would very closely check if there are no leaks (both ip and dns leaks) before assuming the client devices are in fact protected.
and if you run a vpn client on the pc as well, then you’d essentially be having a vpn tunnel within another tunnel, which is probably overkill (assuming that the router tunnel is properly configured!) and would dramatically impact speeds.
Oh cool. Thanks
So if I am on the network of my router (which is running a vpn) I don’t have to explicitly turn on the vpn via openvpn on my computer?
Thanks for the info!
correct. if the router vpn is properly configured and turned on, the clients connected to the router (pc/phone/etc) don’t necessarily need a separate vpn connection. everything going through the router will go through the vpn tunnel
