I’ve been noticing a lot of captcha puzzles coming up to prove I’m not a robot, even when my vpn is off and has been for days now.
Are mullvad giving people my ip address to use for whatever people use it for?
I’ve never had captchas come up without a vpn before.
Uh no?
That’s a terrible business model, your problem lies somewhere else.
Try checking a test page like whoer.net with your VPN switched off to see whether or not your IP address has been blacklisted.
Either way, it’s probably best to use VPN with SOCKS5 proxy
If you use mullvad dns server this will occur
I agree it is a terrible business model so I’m hoping my guess is wrong.
What comes up when the captcha comes up is “our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. This page checks to see if it’s really you sending the requests, and not a robot”
I’m not tech savy by any means. Do you have any idea what that might mean?
It says it’s not blacklisted but it does say -20% language difference or whatever that means.
My brother has been googling a lot of indian websites for his uni research and he showed me the captca come up. It said something to do with internet traffic and he thinks it might be because of the amount of indian websites he visited.
I’ve never had the problem on my laptop, but figured it might have something to do with mullvad.
Does mullvad not have socks5 proxy?
So you’re basically saying the opposite thing from the other person who commented here where they do give out my IP to other users? That is an awful business model and I need to cancel my account with them asap. A VPN should not work like that as that compromises my safety if others are doing illegal shit with my IP.
Like I said, my vpn is not on so I shouldn’t have been getting those captchas
My vpn is switched off and has been for days. Shouldn’t be happening…
There’s a lot of different reasons for something like that to happen, it could be that your IP was added to a blacklist like spamhaus.
Your system and/or your browser are probably set to a different language setting than the location of your IP address. Could well be why you’re seeing so many captcha’s maybe. Try setting them all the same and see if that helps.
The link I sent you explains how using Mullvad’s SOCKS5 proxy can help lower the amount of captcha’s you get
You are not understanding what I am saying. They do not give out your local IP. However when you use a VPN the exit point of your VPN creates a new IP - that is how a VPN works. So the new IP, which is not directly related to yours, always comes from a bank of IP addresses that they have available. They don’t give it just to you, it’s used and recycled.
So using a VPN whoever you connect to will never know your real IP, but they will know your assigned IP, and therefore may know you are using a VPN.
Dns settings are also on yiur router. Your isp or the dns server may be to blame also, may not be related to mullvad
I checked one of the pages linked below by someone who commented, and it says my ip is not blacklisted anywhere…
Thank you very much. I’ll try that and see what happens! I’m not that tech savy so much appreciated.
I will also have a look at that link. Thank you
My question wasn’t to do with the IP that the VPN provider gives me, it’s to do with whether or not my local IP is being used as a server by other users of Mullvad. I’m trying to understand whether Mullvad allows people from around the world to connect to my local IP and do whatever they want.
I’m noticing a lot of Captchas even though I haven’t used a VPN for days. So my assumption was that someone else might have access to my local IP and the only thing that was popping into my mind was that Mullvad might be sharing my local IP with other users from around the world who use their service.
Hmm, perhaps someone on your network did something they’re not supposed to? if the problem persists I guess you could call your ISP and have them assign you a new IP address.
No your local IP that is assigned to you from Mullvad is not given out to anyone. All they see is your “new” IP. Sorry I was confusing you on that.
As to why once you turn off the VPN you are getting more captcha logins - IDK but it’s possible you’ve been “flagged” on the other end as a VPN user. Try clearing your browser cache and cookies and see if it persists.
My brother has been visiting a lot of indian websites for his uni research so that might be it?
The message he gets on the captcha page is:
“our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network. This page checks to see if it’s really you sending the requests, and not a robot”
Someone below commented that when you sign up for a VPN, you should expect that they’ll give your IP to someone else to use. That is so not ok if it is true with Mullvad.
I think there is still some confusion between us on what I mean by the local IP thing haha.
By local IP, I mean the IP my ISP provider has given me. I’m trying to figure out whether my local IP, as provided by my ISP, has been taken by Mullvad and is being used as a server that other people from around the world can access.
And I will try that method! Hopefully I haven’t been flagged. My local IP as provided by my ISP is not blacklisted anywhere so not sure!
My brother has been visiting a lot of indian websites for his uni research so that might be it?
I honestly doubt it, just have your ISP change your IP that should do it. And if the issue persists even then it could be due to a malware infection on one of your devices.

It’s true that some free VPNs have done that in the past but Mullvad doesn’t do such a thing, I’ve remove the aforementioned comment.
