I live in Germany, so I’m looking for something that has servers nearby.
I’ve been using HMA’s vpn service but it is terrible and choppy for me as of late. I’m not looking for anonymity, just a stable connection because I mainly use it to play games which use ports my campus has blocked.
Different VPN providers have different strengths and few weaknesses of course. In general, there are few factors which make or break a VPN provider and these are the ones which we consider while evaluating a particular VPN service provider.

Have you tried using openVPN’s UDP protocol offered as a joint service with your HMA membership? I was using HMA to play games but it was terribly laggy, but once I switched to UDP protocol my ping problems were solved. I don’t exactly have full details on how to use the the UDP protocol since I’m at school in my phone, but I’ll pm you once I get home.
I would recommend VyprVPN by GoldenFrog (http://vpncreative.com/vyprvpn-review/). They have been investing heavily in their service offering with new server closters around the world and mobile / desktop apps. I’m using VyprVPN’s desktop app on my MacBook Air and it runs smoothly. The connection speed depends on the encryption grade and protocol. They just opened a server cluster in Frankfurt, so distance should not be an issue.
An alternativ is IPVanish (http://vpncreative.com/ipvanish-review/). They are similarly upgrading along the line in the hopes to bite into HideMyAss’ market dominance.
careful to trust any so called VPN review site as the listing is often bought and paid for by the VPN providers being featured. a better choice is any sight that features unfiltered customer feedback like;
this is just one of dozens of sights out there - my point is not to follow that one, but simply to look for ones with user reviews as well as site published comparitive service details. i am aware user reviews can be spoofed as well, but as long as it’s easy to post a user review, it’s likely most of the ones already there are genuine.
Haven’t looked into that since there was a time when it was perfect without having to do it =). So I just assumed it became terrible on their end. I’ll have a look now. Thanks!
vpntunnel.se is HORRIBLE from USA to Europe - avoid it completely. speeds are terrible and their support forum get’s no support at all. they also ignore support emails. their custom client requires 1 Gigabyte of .NET patches… yuck! don’t even try them - they lie when they say money back if not satisfied within the first 3 days of use. i cancelled my second day and had to get paypal to open an investigation to get my money back. you’ll notice torrentfreak dropped them in their 2013 article after getting so many complaints after their 2012 recommendation.
if i lived in Germany i would look for a VPN provider based and outletting in Luxembourg as they are close to you, know german for support emails, and have much better privacy protection laws and internet infrastructure.
I have experienced vpntunnel.se for a month myself, which is why I turned to HMA =). However, as I said, it’s not good for me lately, and the chat with customer support didn’t help at all, since all they said was to try other servers or try later.
Yeah, tried this as soon as you replied yesterday, couldn’t connect, I tried the live chat support, they told me to just wait. It still doesn’t work, and my subscription expires tomorrow, so I guess I’ll try some other service
