Managed to set my VPN from USA using these 1 router there and 1 router on road. But wireguard speeds not matching hopes(wifi)
What are your upload and download speeds at both your house and where you are at now without using a VPN? I see this issue with Comcast, as there upload speeds are normally much less then their download speeds. It is probably your Internet connection and not your hardware, as I can get about the sames rates you are showing using an old GL-AR300M as my Wireguard server connected to a Comcast router in the US.
Unfortunately im not 100% on the DL/UL at the house where the host router is. I believe it is something similar to my 3rd screenshot, which are my speeds in Mexico/current location/travel router location. Host router location is using cox panoramic wifi(unlimited) if that answers anything - it is at a friends house. I ran tests earlier and i believe the DL was somewhere between 100-200 but not sure about the UL. I’d ask them to run a teat but i bothered them enough lol i’m just glad it is working
There upload speed is your down load speed, which is probably your problem. You could have gone with a much cheaper AR300m16 as your VPN server.
Yeah, unfortunately there wasnt a highly detailed guide explaining this. I was kind of winging it and hoping for the best. I figured it would be best to not invest in the lower end items. Fortunately, the two routers were under $200 total.
Overall, it sounds like it doesnt matter if i have the Beryl or the Slate as the host, as with wireguard, they both exceed the speed the UL speed of the host location. And i could have gone cheaper on both because of the UL speed at the host location?
I could still return the Slate and switchover to an AR300, but the price differential is about $45. Traveling, returning X, and setting up Y would end up not being worth it. I wish i had known a bit more beforehand, but it’s alright.
Measure throughput on both the remote and the host networks via ethernet.
You are ultimately going to be limited to:
-
The lesser of the remote download speed and the host upload speed for your download throughput.
-
The lesser of the remote upload speed and the host download speed for your upload throughput.
By means of an example, say I have a 200/50 internet connection I share with you and your internet connection in Mexico is 150/100.
Your throughput over wireguard with me is going to be min(50, 150) download and min(200, 100) upload. So 50/100.
These are your ‘theoretical’ maximums. Couple that with traffic both locally and remotely, wifi congestion, protocol overhead, the quality of the internet service at both locations etc and you’ll see that you may come close to these numbers but never reach them.
