I have the higher tiered ProtonVPN. I absolutely love it so far. However, my college blocks VPNs from being used. I’ve known this for a while, but I tried out the free Android ProtonVPN app on the folleges, and to my surprise, it worked. So, I went ahead a bought a bundle with ProtonMail and ProtonVPN.
Here’s the issue: even though the Android ProtonVPN app is able to to be used on my colleges network, despite blocking VPNs, the Desktop ProtonVPN application is unable to connect and will not work. There aren’t many settings to change, but I’m looking for advice on what I need to do. It doesn’t make sense to me that the Android app works but the Windows desktop app doesn’t.
It is possible that your college blocks the ProtonVPN site, which prevents the windows application from getting the servers or logging in. Try connecting your laptop to a hostspot from your phone.
Try setting up a manual IKEv2 connection
I’m not sure which way my college blocks VPNs. I just know that they do.
My phone and my laptop are both hooked up through a router I have in my dorm. The router is simply just plugged into the school’s Ethernet. The VPN mobile app works like a charm (currently using it now). The desktop does not work.
When I connect my laptop through my mobile hotspot using the cellular network, my laptop secures a connection right away with the VPN. Once I reconnect to my college wifi, it loses connection.
This still confuses me considering the mobile app works but the desktop version doesn’t (even though they are connected to both the same network).
Can you set the desktop to TCP and try again?
I tried TCP and UDP. Both of them still don’t work. I even tried connecting to different countries (not that it would work, but I figured I’d try anyway).
Does IKEv2 work on android?
Yeah, it looks like that is the default… I have the option to switch from that to Open VPN, but I just stuck with the default.
Odd, can you try and access ProtonVPN.com from your browser on your PC?
Yeah, I can easily access ProtonVPN.com on my desktop while connected to the college wifi.
