Since we get a lot of asking for VPN provider recommendations, we’re making this megathread a monthly occurrence (you’ll find the newest one at the top subreddit menu). It’s a chance for you to ask for or recommend your favorite provider.
When recommending a provider, you must mention at least a couple points for why you prefer it. Don’t just list VPN features that are common knowledge - explain whyyouchose it. Comments simply mentioning a provider’s name aren’t allowed. No affiliate links, links to review sites, or VPN provider websites. No shilling either.
You might also want to check out our comparison table. We update it regularly so you could find a provider that ticks all your boxes. There’s also a pinned special deals thread for when you decide.
Keep in mind this megathread will still be looked after by the mods.
I’m so lost and confused with the comparison chart
Looking at the comparison chart is very confusing to me and I just don’t understand it… Are the numbers like some type of 1-5 rating/grade system? Or is it something totally different?.. aside from the VPN name and special deal offers I honestly have no idea what the compression chart numbers mean
After spending most of a day researching, I’ve short-listed Mullvad VPN and ProtonVPN as companies whose ownership, local laws, supported protocols, data logging and server locations seem to pass muster.
However, I can’t decide which of those two should receive my business. I like Mullvad’s audit history and focus on transparency - being able to read their audit reports is a great way to build confidence. ProtonVPN apparently has better user apps, exerts greater control over its servers (owning all instead of renting many like Mullvad) and clearly spends more on marketing - although its owners do not communicate as clearly and frequently as Mullvad’s.
Would any kind Redditor please be able to help me out with some convincing information or argument to dislodge me from the fence I’m now sitting on?
This comparison table is very helpful. It appears that N⭕️rd has scored quite high on there, but as a complete vpn noob, I can’t decide between that and proton at the moment. Anyone got any advice or experience with either of them that could help me with my decision? Thank you.
Also, because Nrd is so big now, I’ve seen some negative reviews on the experience and some people are saying to stay away from them, is it worth taking that into consideration when deciding? Or are they a good reputable vpn provider?
Any one have an opinion on which is better with safety and streaming speed between nord VPN or express VPN???.. Also open to other providers … Preferably one with a low monthly payment rather than yearly but also offers the same features …tia
Probably should consider adding the Wireleap Libre network too (it’s kind of like Tor but without the hidden onion sites). It uses the open source wireleap protocol that anyone can use to build VPN networks like Tor.

Their client and speed has improved significantly since the last time I checked them out 4+ years ago. Getting 600 MBs on my gig connection. They removed the instant access 3h trial which is a bummer, but I guess it got abused. I still like the no nonsense consistent 5€ price, and support still feels like talking to real humans and not just a ticket system with copy pasta troubleshooting messages. Being able to filter servers by ownership is also something that’s not common. Still seem to have a spotless reputation, unless something significant blew past me.
What I dislike is their inbuild adblocker, it just broke a bunch of sites for me (I ended up filing a few github reports, so they do get fixed, but it takes time and is tedious). Also I heard they aren’t ideal for streaming (haven’t tested this myself since I barely use streaming nowadays).
Is there a VPN that charges for data instead of monthly? I need something specifically for accessing a website for like 15 min 3 times a month. So basically the only thing I need is a server on Japan, and something secure.
What are y’alls’ thoughts on FastestVPN? Insanely good pricing, but in that same regard the pricing feels almost too good to be true. If they do at least deliver on what they promised though, it’d be just what I’m looking for.
Truthfully I don’t even care all too much about security or anything, I’m just looking for something that can VPN into a different country every now and then so I can watch stuff, the main reason at the moment being to watch Formula E.
I am looking for a VPN I can use on my android phone in combination with popcorn time, but I really don’t know what I should be looking at. I know they have an in app option through vpn.ht, but also wonder if this is the only one that would work, or if there are better options that I can use, also in combination with torrent-clients for example.
I just want a low price vpn mainly used for piracy, like downloading games from the pirate bay. Would Mullvad be good for that? I don’t want my ISP to be informed that I’m pirating anything.
Just want a good and cheap vpn so that I can torrent and pirate stuff. I’ve seen mullvad and that looks good but any other reccomendations? the cheaper the better
Right below the chart itself is a section on “how scores are given for each criteria”. Further down are separate sections for each criteria where you can see what factors are taken into account.
proton, or at least protonMail, has a history of giving out user information. a while back, the french government had protonMail give the names of some students who were planning a truancy strike. im not sure if the same issue could happen with a vpn though
edit to comment on your ? re: safety/speed–
safety: all the below have a 5 or 4 rating on jurisdiction (4 for Mull); for audited no logs, N🅾rd = 5, Mullv🅰d = 4, E❌press = 3
speed: all the below have a 5 rating; another site I looked at claims these average mbps-- N🅾rd = 369, E❌press = 135, Mullv🅰d = 89
personally, after comparing everything I’ll be going with N🅾rd today; it fits my price point (USD 78.96/25mo; 3.16/1mo), is fast (see above) and I only need windows & android use
if you want something you don’t have to lock into for a year+, I would go with Mullv🅰d; they’re solidly recommended across the board, but a bit slower & more expensive at GBP 5/1mo (USD ~6.54) …or GBP 4.5/1mo (USD ~5.89) if you pay with crypto
personally would go with E❌press only if I played ps4/ps5 games or had a device running on ChromeOS, since it seems to be the fastest/best option for those uses. otherwise a bit too expensive for me (USD 99.95/15mo; 6.67/1mo)
really depends on your personal use factors, but hope that helped friend
Be careful your comment kind goes against the rules of this thread and it might get deleted… I’d hate to see your helpful suggestion/opinion get taken down
