My experience on learning french for 4+ years

So I’ll make it short as short as I can because it doesn’t need to be long:

I learned through at the start with Duolingo. Then when I could buy movies in french , I bought them . At that time, I focused on the movies (Transformers, some marvel movies (Disney plus just launched at the time ) and some other movies. Instead of learning vocab from sites like memrise or anki, I learned french vocab from movies with subtitles (and looked up words i didnt know) And I used films (not YouTube ) to learn the pronunciation the best I could. I know YouTube is good to use to learn casual and common words, but I rather like using films cause they’re more entertaining and they stay with Me. Now about a year ago, I found out about videofutur’s “Viva” a video buy as you want service. They work and you can buy stuff (but you need a VPN) and you keep them for good. Ive been told I have very good french pronunciation, I have the ‘r’ down which is supposed to be hard (to me it wasn’t) and I am good at hearing french but no expert. Now currently, I use music to learn vocab, i use duo lingo and occasionally a textbook or memrise as well as watch films on Viva and Disney plus and keep working on pronunciation. Reading wise I still need to work on (I’m terrible at spelling) but writing is somewhat easy.

That’s how it is to me.

Well done! I took a similar method. Duolingo for about a month before entirely dropping it and just watching movies/tv and looking up the new words I found. Im 1.5 years in.

So what’s your level? Did you take a test? And I am curious what is it that you practice on Duolingo after 4+ years

Also, I advise watching European french content as it’s more widely used and Canadian french is limited to Canada to European french is the best to start with and when you get advanced then feel free to learn Canadian French’s accent and vocab

Thanks. And yeah, I advise you to watch what you like. It’ll give you more motivation. If you watch something you don’t, then you’ll be disinterested and bored and won’t be motivated to watch and learn new words.

My level is B1 close to B2. Yes I have taken a test. I don’t use Duolingo anymore. I used it for a few years then did what I explained in the post to this day
