Nintendo Switch Online without VPN in Shanghai?

How is the online mode of nintendo switch in Shanghai? I’ll be going back soon and thinking if I should still renew my membership. Last time I used my switch there, it took hours to download updates. But maybe it changed now with Tencent officially bringing Nintendo Switch to China? My internet is provided by my apartment so I can’t put a vpn on it.

My downloads on Switch seem fine, even without VPN. The issue is they sometimes fail for whatever reason, but generally do download quickly enough when they work.

I haven’t in a while, but Splatoon 2 and MHGU and Animal Crossing all worked fine online earlier this year when I played during quarantine. Something like Smash is probably completely hopeless, though.

You need a 加速器 box. UU or QeeYou. There’s even an app version from Tencent that gives you some free usage out of it where you just change the IP address your Switch is connecting to and you’ll get significantly faster download speeds from eshop.

Still takes forever to download updates, but without a VPN, I was able to play online about 70% of the day (mornings were the best).

It’s not great for online games though. A few weeks ago I bought a internet router that has a VPN service built with it - routes me to NA or Europe and have no packet loss when gaming.

If your big into gaming I would recommend looking into one of these routers, my connection here is better then it ever was back home.

I think you want to avoid lag-sensitive games like FPS, but where it’s ok (e.g. Pokémon), it’s fine for me.

I use a proxy (japan location) on the Nintendo Switch and it works perfectly when playing so far. Maybe try that.

I personally use UU because it’s done by Netease (“ports” Blizzard games to China) and because it doesn’t require a router or additional hardware outside of your laptop. One week trial to boot. Use the in-house version, not the international one.

Could you please tell more about the router? How can I find it in Shanghai? Is it expansive? I’m so tired of VPNs not working out…

Can you recommend which router w/ VPN you picked? Thanks!!

I’d love to know this info too. I was somewhat of a daily gamer who essentially stopped cold turkey once I moved to China. Would be amazing to be able to connect etc…

Please help! haha

This 100% I’ve had this for a few months and use it for my PS4 and swtich. I play warzone with my friends from US with no lag. And Switch online works perfect as well. I used to have problems downloading games, but just downloaed Animal crossing this week in 2hrs with no issues.

Does this mean you can easily play European blizzard games such as WoW?

Not op, but I used to do a bunch of vpn router installations while working for ShanghaiGeeks. Most major vpn providers are compatible with routers (look up “vpn name” router install ) Some providers also sell routers that come with a vpn pre-installed like Astrill or Nord.

Hey, I’m copying and pasting the original message that I saw in a different thread. Hopefully everyone asking will get a notification for this. (original message at the very bottom) I can confirm with the original post about this, I can game with hardly any lag on Xbox, PC and Switch. Even games that are notoriously unreliable (RDR2 Online) run really well for me.

Here is their list of routers (VPN service also through this company)

On their website, they have a bunch of options. I like to game so I bought the most expensive one (600 rmb or something like that). It get’s delivered to your house, you need to unbox it and connect it to your main Wifi. you need to log into the new router by typing in the IP address listed on the router online - it will let you log in, set up password etc.

After you have it connected and set up (meaning you can connect to the new router and use WeChat/baidu) you need to download their APP through the app store (I use iphone and was able to find it on the app store, android should have it too). There is a QR code in the box that will take you to the app. from there, make sure you are connected to the “TaiXingRen 5g network” and open up the app

Once you do this, you need to ask the customer service team for a code to start your subscription (I got three months VPN service bundled into my purchase). I bought this on Taobao and asked them there for the code. They were helpful with instructions on setting it up.

When you have the code, you need to input it in the App, get confirmation (takes like 30 minutes after submitting the code) and then when you are set up, you can select which server you want to use (US West / East / Europe / Korea etc). from there your good to go, connect your devices to the TaiXingRen wifi and youll be gaming with ZERO lag. It’s pretty cool.

The last steps for setting up the VPN are a bit tricky… I had my fiance talk to the customer service for the details. They are really helpful and send over photos with instructions on how to set it up.

It’s one of these- I’m not sure if it’s the optimal choice because I was too busy to do any research. I just asked the China Unicom guy who sorted out our new internet connection what he’d recommend.

It’s made a huge difference for me though, no more packet loss, can play on NA servers against better players and play with friends without having 500 ping lol.

I’ve not jumped around and tested all the EU servers offered by them though, some might be better than the one I tried."

Its what I dread, moving to Shanghai in January.

Perhaps I am not being clear?

Netease offers UU booster as an application you run on your computer to connect to game servers specifically. While I am sure you can connect to European servers for Blizzard games, you can also connect to pretty much any major game server on both PC and any of the 3 major consoles of this generation.

It is all in Chinese, but run a translator app over it and it’s honestly pretty easy. They have both text and video tutorials too on how to configure you console for connecting.

UU also offers a “box/router” of their own where presumably it “just works” but that’s a couple hundred to get started so I’m recommending the app because of its low cost and 7-day trial. I also recognized Netease as the company handling Blizzard ports to China… meaning that they are a pretty well-established company here if you just arrived.

I won the QeeYou box so I’ve been using that along with my standard 1-year subscription on the PC together. Does UU force you to have two separate subscriptions for console vs. PC boosting?

QeeYou on PC works very well. The box for Smash kind of cuts out at times and makes playing against Japanese a possibility but then randomly it’ll have issues playing against people in China. Not sure if it’s game-specific, service-specific or just Internet-specific.

Where can I get this app?

It’s all on the one app using your same sub. It’s a ridiculous deal honestly but it’s not really something you’d see advertised in non-chinese internet if that makes sense.

I get the appeal of a “booster box” (special router) because you plug it in and it’s good to go from what I understand… but starting the software on my laptop and turning it off and on manually is well worth the money saved since the software setup was extremely little hassle for me to begin with.

You still need to boost the router from the app and choose the server/region/game.

How does UU’s version work for consoles? Manually switching IP from on/off and it’s always the same server?
