Hey everyone, I have been using NordVPN now for a long time and for the most part it has always worked really well. Except for the past couple weeks, maybe just over a month or so actually.
I also use Chrome Remote Desktop a lot and have had no issues using it with NordVPN running. But now for some reason i have been having issues.
In Chrome Remote Desktop i can see my devices but when i click to connect to one it just spins around trying to load before timing out. Usually when i click on it a couple seconds for it to make a connection then i get asked for the passcode then im in.
But i found out the issue is NordVPN, under the Threat Protection, there is Web Protection. While is turned on, Chrome Remote Desktop will not connect. It just times out unable to connect.
There is an option to pause this Web Protection for 5 minutes. If i do that and then try to connect it works, and the connection stays active and working even when the Web Protection turns back on.
Any idea how to fix this issue? id rather keep the Web Protection on as its a useful security feature.
SOLUTION
Oddly enough, if you also connect to yet another NordVPN server using the browser extension that was likely installed in Edge, Google Chrome, etc. when you first installed the NordVPN program, Chrome Remote Desktop will connect perfectly.
Web protection is basically adblock. Probably the DNS filter is blocking parts of chrome remote desktop connection. I dont think there is much you can do.
Just turn it off and install adblock on your browser, or use adblocking dns. They will be much better. Nord is not a security company, I wouldnt rely on their “security” feature.
This still seems to be an issue, just wanted to add more context in case they haven’t figured it out yet. Chrome Remote Desktop doesn’t work even when the VPN is disconnected. But once you close out of NordVPN entirely, it will work. Hopefully you guys will be able to fix it soon.
