Opera expands its VPN Pro service to Desktop users

Currently, VPN Pro for desktop requires the developer build of Opera Browser.

Uh… does that mean that the “VPN” is provided by the web browser - which is not actually a real VPN? If it is indeed a real VPN, why does it need Opera browser?

The blog post implies a separate utility that provides the system-wide VPN (where Opera will eventually fetch the utility itself once it’s stable instead of you having to manually download it), but also says that you need to use Opera and enable Sync in it to use the VPN. Sounds like the utility doesn’t handle its own logging in and authentication and relies on the communication with the browser and sync to do that. But, don’t know. I’m also wondering if you’re required to sync something when enabling sync or if you can leave everything unchecked.
