Plex and Hotspot Shield

Hello,

I am trying to run my Plex media server on a windows 10 machine while Hotspot Shield runs in the background. Remote access is happy while the VPN is off since i forwarded the port 32400. However as soon as i connect the VPN remote access shows as inaccessible, and unreachable outside of my network. I also tried Settings>Network> Custom server access URLs> and adding my public ip and port to no avail.

Been pulling my hair trying to figure this one out.

Thanks for reading.

I’m pretty sure there is no way to do that with just the hotspot shield program, because as soon as you turn on the vpn all your traffic gets routed through their servers and becomes inaccessible for the remote connection.

I have a setup just like you’re describing with an OpenWRT router and policy based routing for the vpn, but setting up all that will take quite a bit of time and some money depending on your current network setup.

Not too sure about hotspot shield and them with port forwarding, but I currently use PIA and I’ve been able to port forward and get it working.

There may be an option in the settings to only route certain connections (i.e qBitTorrent) through the VPN and let the rest go through the normal connection.

Comcast modem > Asus gt 5300 > Plex server.
Seems like I have to give up on the idea, damn.

Currently, Hotspot shield only allows domains to be bypassed. No applications at the moment. I lucked out and grabbed a life time license so I am stuck with them. Might need to use a different VPN until I can solve this dilemma with a virtual machine or something.

One way you could still do this is by setting up a virtual machine on your computer and putting your vpn and I’m assuming some sort of download client on that VM. Then you could run plex on your computer normally without the vpn and the remote connection should work. I haven’t personally tested a setup like this, but it should work it just requires a bit of tinkering to get going.

Yeah, I’d recommend going with a different VPN. I’ve had nothing but good experiences with PIA, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and Surfshark.

Not entirely sure, but if Hotspot Sheild supports OpenVPN you might be able to configure it that way.

Don’t give me hope I am so excited, you just relit my flame. Dude you have my thanks, this might just work!!!
