ProtonVPN broken in Linux Mint?

I just updated to the latest ProtonVPN version and it is no longer working. The GUI loops ‘Loading app…’ followed by an error message ‘Something unexpected occurred.’.

I tried removing it completely and installing from scratch - same issue. Anyone else having issues with the latest version in Mint?

It got to our attention that on Ubuntu 20.04 (and its derivatives) the Kill Switch was the cause of this due to a deprecated method (only available from on Ubuntu 20.10) though we’ve already issued a fix on this.

Edit: As long as you have this package with the specified version it should be fixed python3-proton-vpn-killswitch-network-manager 0.4.3

Not sure if its exactly the same issue but here on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Gnome 42.9, X11, the GUI client loads up the first time, then says “an unexpected error occurred” when trying to connect, becomes unresponsive, and after closing it, it won’t run at all.

I’m having the same issue

It doesn’t go well on Linux Mint 21.3, it’s terrible, it’s better to configure with OpenVPN.

Why can’t download all the configuration of the servers?, now I have to download them one by one, why?, it’s getting worse.

Doesn’t work in Mint 22 Wilma, either. get gui installed and it runs the first time, won’t connect, after that it won’t even launch. Removing app and all associated files and directories before reinstalling accomplishes nothing

Used this page.

Thanks for the response. I verified I do have version 0.4.3 of the python3-proton-vpn-killswitch-network-manager package installed, but the app is still having that issue.

yep, that is the same issue I am experiencing.

Thats a great question. Surfsh*** runs better, although disables a lot of sites.

I’m also having issues. Followed same instructions, normal and beta version.

The gui will not open, it just hangs. Mashing ctrl-c eventually breaks it with a python error thrown

Did you get anything sorted?

In that case I’d suggest contacting support, though do note that we only officially support Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora and our support might not fully help resolve your issue.

I’m in touch with the support. I’ll let you know what comes up.
In the meantime, I can confirm that Wireguard works with the configurations that can be generated through the account page. Not sure if that’s available to anyone.

I am having the same issue (Ubuntu 20.04.6, python3-proton-vpn-killswitch-network-manager 0.4.3) - it worked fine until last week… reinstalling Proton VPN did not solve the issue. Any new ideas? Thanks for your support!

Edit: to better describe the behaviour: after starting ProtonVPN the main window appears. Clicking any connection (no matter if “quick” or a selected country) results in two pop-ups shortly after each other (displaying “something unexpected occured”) and looping in “connecting to”. “cancel connection” doesn’t work.

The support team asked me for a bunch of info, made me uninstall and reinstall the app completely, nothing worked. They forwarded the ticket to the dev team. That’s that. :person_shrugging:
