Questions about leaving ProtonVPN on all the time and KILLSWITCH

I leave my computer on all the time, it’s connected via WiFi and I have the KILLSWITCH set to ON. Sometimes I come back to my computer and in my notifications tray it will have a notification from ProtonVPN that says “CONNECTION ESTABLISHED” with a timestamp. So, did my computer lose connection for a period of time and then reconnect? If so, why didn’t the killswitch prevent the computer from reconnecting to the internet? Is there IP leakage that occurs during this time?

Thanks for any information you can provide

Likely it means that there was an automatic reconnect that happened after the connection dropped. The killswitch prevents internet traffic from flowing during that time.

set your killswitch to --always-on to be sure. Sometimes protonvpn doesn’t autoconnect on boot. In that time your IP is leaked.

I would recommend to check power management settings and make sure the wifi adapter isnt being powered off.

muchas gracias mate, good Protonvpn Vs Hma Vpn
We utilize protonvpn

So, does it connect to the VPN before the connection starts to flow again? Or does the internet flow first and then the VPN engages? I’m asking if between the time it loses connection to the internet and the time the connection to the internet comes back, is my IP exposed?

Alright, I’ll look into that. Thanks

Killswitch blocks traffic until VPN connects. Your IP is not leaked during the disconnected time and during the reconnection process. Note that this only applies to when the connection is broken, not when the user explicitly disconnects.

Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it.

Curious, do you happen to know if your real IP will leak if you force a new connection?

I’m running the Linux ProtonVPN CLI, and if I’m connected to country “A”, and then enter “protonvpn c” to start a new connection, it will show that it’s disconnecting from country “A” and then establish a new connection to country “B”, since “B” is the country I selected in my new connection.

Just curious.

Your IP may be exposed for a brief moment. Use the always-on killswitch to mitgate this risk.
