Hey guys - I had a client this morning not be able to load NEGUI. I did my normal routine of uninstalling and updating Etc. I called up Support, and they let me know that:
They have an broken code issue in the latest updates of net extender, this applies to all net extenders on the latest updates of Windows 10, v2004 and v1909 included.
The fix for this is to install Sonicwall Mobile Connect on Windows Store, and use VPN settings in Windows.
It works like a charm! remember to use https:// in front of WAN
Been there done that. Then I did this. Now I’m back to what I’ve done already… Trust me… Mobile Connect is not only not the answer, it’s not even an option. Built-in Windows VPN is littered with issues, so is NetExtender but it’s 100% more reliable. Try the latest 10.0 release of NetExtender. Just updated a bunch of clients and stability improved dramatically.
Note this is a users option take it with a grain of salt. As many people have ready pointed out the Mobile Connect app from the windows store is hot garbage. It may or may not fix your issue.
I personally manage a large group of users on windows 1909 and 2004 and have not had any issues with NetExtender that were not solvable.
Mobile Connect has had an issue for us in the past where it registers the wrong adapters IP address in our DNS servers. It registers the users local IP (from their home router LAN for example) instead of the SonicWall Mobile Connect adapters address. This of course breaks a few things with name resolution, and traffic going out to the client machine.
NetExtender has been stable for us through all versions of Windows 10 though. I believe we’re on 9.0.274 or something like that, the latest available on the free downloads section of MySonicwall.
Occasionally the service won’t wake up and the user has to restart, but we’ve had more problems caused by our SonicOS firmware on our units than with the client.
Didn’t know there was a v10 though, anyone got a link to the release notes?
I don’t think Sonicwall Mobile Connect allows “tunnel all.” My customers need this, and they like the little Global VPN Client indicator in the taskbar notification area.
It all started when I wasn’t able to connect to the users remote laptops using Windows 10 built-in tool “Remote Assistance”. I put two-to-two together and found if the user using NetExtender I was able to establish a connection, but not for the Mobile Connect app.
After calling SonicWALL support and usually they thought it was my network, it turns out the SonicWALL developers determine it was Mobile Connect app limitation. The Mobile Connect app is not able to write registries in the Windows 10 Operating system and access certain system files that can register the proper DNS addresses to the DNS server.
SonicWALL support says by design their Mobile Connect app will never register the proper DNS addresses because of how Windows apps are treated on the operating systems.
Windows Apps - by design - are limited what they can access on the operating system.
You will need to look under the Hyper-V SMA 500 virtual appliance section to find the latest version of Netextender. It may be a few SMA releases down the list.
Mobile connect for Mac is an entirely different beast then the one for windows. The one for Mac i’ve found is rock solid with little to no issues. However windows is another story all together.
That makes a lot of sense. Similar I guess to the limitation in the new Windows Terminal app - you have to jump through all sorts of hoops to run it as administrator.
Thanks for the info!
