To what extent is this real in India???
Been torrenting for fifteen years now, nothing ever happens. If you’re worried just get a VPN and bind your torrent client to it. Problem solved.

Rules toh hai but enforcement nhi, these rules just look good on the paper with no actual enforcement.
Torrent is banned in most countries. But only people in developed countries getin trouble coz of the implementation there. +It is a major problem there. In counties like India there are many other major problems that the government gotta focus on before some kids pirating movies or games. So yeah. There aren’t much consequences

Everything is LEGAL until caught 
i have been doing yts/rarbg/1337x for almost 10 years. i never knew it was an offence. ya toh movie release nahi hoti ya fir scene cut krdenge. aur waise bhi i only view and download.
Unless you run a website to distribute on a large scale they will never go after you. You can torrent at home in peace.
Torrent by itself is not illegal. If you have a file and you want to share it with others, torrenting is completely fine. The problem arises when you do that on files that aren’t yours and have copyright. Then it’s a violation of law.
It’s hard to arrest every downloader though, number could be in millions. And the downloaders could be in other countries too, where the law officers who took the complaint doesn’t have any jurisdiction.
But the uploaders can get arrested. I remember in 2015, when Malayalam movie Premam’s sensor copy got released, they arrested few uploaders. The original uploader, and few other people who re-upload the copies also got arrested.
But I believe, it’s not torrent the main villain now for movie or tv show piracy. It’s Telegram. Use of torrent requires some technical knowledge and the number of users in India was less. But telegram has made it much easier for everyone.
When government decides that you should be jailed, they will use things like these
