TVNZ can't be fooled by VPN?

I was trying to watch the Scotty Morrison Origins doco on TVNZ, but it says you have to be in NZ to watch their stuff. I tried using Avast VPN (trial version) which showed my IP as being in Auckland, and could log on to the TVNZ site, but when I clicked Play it gave me a Geo-error or something similar.

Is TVNZ too smart for my VPN, or am I doing something wrong? I’ve never bothered with VPNs before, so maybe user error. I’m trying to watch from Guatemala if that makes a difference. I mainly want to see the first episode of season one, if anyone has another source.

Maybe set your VPN to New Zealand first. Once its operational, open up a new Chrome Incognito window and then log into TVNZ+

The issue could be that your chrome browser has record of your Guatemala IP address cached & that could be tipping off TVNZ+ that you’re not in New Zealand…

On iOS you also have to change your Timezone settings back to NZ too, then my VPN (Surfshark) worked on tvnz content…

I’m using express VPN and was able to use TVNZ while I was overseas last month. The mrs didn’t want to miss out on Shortland St.

There are a lot of companies that block VPNs. Some do, some don’t, t’s a full time job for them going around blocking VPN IP ranges though.

You could test by going https://www.whatismyip.com/ and double check it’s picking up your IP’s location as Auckland.

Check your computer’s location and time zone - you may have to change it to NZ

Its gonna depend entirely on what VPN you are using I imagine.

Some VPNs won’t fool them [because they have already figured out those IPs are actually VPNs] while other VPNs will.

And this could potentially change on a day by day basis.
