I use both a PC and a MacBook Pro and I was looking for a way to access my torrent files over a VPN. Ideally, I would live to download everything to my PC and have some easy way to access these files remotely on my MBP.
I set up a network hosted on my PC using Hamachi and also downloaded the client on my MBP but when I right click the option that say “Browse Windows file shares smb://” it takes some time to load then displays an error saying that it is unable to connect to the server. I am very new to VPNs so please bear with me.
Your title indicates “streaming” but your text looks like just copying the files. If you’re looking just to have access to the files, then why not use TeamViewer, which is free for personal use and includes the ability to FTP? I use TeamViewer on my MBP and my wife’s Win8 laptop, so I know the Mac-Windows thing works. Plus, TeamViewer is super easy to set up. Does that help?
Hamachi is a VPN. What this means is that you get access to the local network of PC1. Set up a shared folder for videos so that you can access it on LAN and stream from it while on the home network. Does it work? Yes? Great. You’ve confirmed that you can stream with this method.
Leave the house, go to college / work / wherever, log into hamachi and check your available network folders. If the connection is good, it should work the same way. If it doesnt work, something is blocking hamachi or the network is too slow.
The best thing for this is Subsonic. Hands down you can’t beat it’s features, and it’s open source nature. Subsonic runs on Mac Linux and Windows (server) and the files on the server can be accessed via browser, android apps, and iPhone apps. There is even support for https, so your ISP won’t be able to tell wtf your streaming from your computer and you can enjoy all of your media on the go!
This one should probably stay in tech support, we dont want to help you with your home BS. That being said, what OS are both boxes? Can you ping the VPN address of the other device when hamachi is connected? I think hamachi blocks certain ports, most likely the SMB. you should confirm/deny this.
Yes it will, but not with the same degree of ease. VLC will establish the tunnel, if you will, but you still have to establish the communications between the two endpoints. In other words, VLC does not do FTP, it just makes a connection, so you still have to set up FTP between your two nodes. Make sense?
Edit: Honestly, though, Teamviewer is the way to go for the use you’re describing above. Super easy set up and it’s free.
