VPN for AppleTV

Does anyone know of a way to connect an AppleTV via a VPN with selectable servers in different countries to the internet while going on travel with it?

Installing a typical VPN like ExpressVPN etc. on the Wifi router your AppleTV connects to, is of course no option during travel to foreign places, as you don‘t have access to the Wifi router of your hotel or apartment.

Nevertheless, I would still like to be able to stream certain country-specific content directly to my AppleTV (not just mirroring it from an iPhone/iPad/Macbook, as the video quality of mirroring it from these devices is too low), so I‘d like to reach out and ask, if anyone knows a solution for that?

You can get a travel router with VPN capability. It will connect to the hotel WiFi as a client, and create a new WiFi network for your devices to connect to. GL.iNet makes some good ones.

I am currently doing what you want to do. It requires you to connect apple tv via Ethernet to a computer.

In my case, Ethernet from apple tv to Ethernet adapter to MacBook air. Obviously it would be pretty annoying that your computer is now wired when watching tv. Fortunately/unfortunately the MacBook air started having issues on our trip so we upgraded to a new MBA and use this old one specifically as a bridge from appletv to vpn server.

This was the only solution I found that works for appletv since it doesn’t let you do it with any appletv VPN app.

Let me know if this is a solution and I’ll share the details.

It’s coming, soon.

tvOS 17 with Native VPN support

safeshell vpn on Apple TV, you can try, it’s free now at no cost, basic and pretty good

You are traveling with a TV? I’m confused. Is it the Apple TV + streaming service being asked about? I’ve been traveling around Europe and never had any geoblocking issues with it. Even the MLS package works without a VPN which seems like it shouldn’t.

I usually use my Mac with VPN and use AirPlay to stream to the Apple TV.

Pretty sure Apple TV itself is geo free - i stream all my Apple TV content while traveling with no issue. - if you are talking about traveling with the hockey puck to access other channels like HBO or something then you need a Amazon fire stick that has vpn apps you can use to connect to US specific channels.

I really hate downvoters when I’m just trying to help. You don’t like my answer - gfo

If u use vpn like Nord, they have something that’s called dns vpn. Basically you just need to change the dns settings in Apple TV device with the dns address assigned to you by Nord.

Otherwise, you’ll need a router that supports vpn and have your Apple TV connected to the router.

You can get a firestick and if your VPN service offers a firestick app just run it through there.

Works on Google tv/chrome cast. I’m using tailscale as vpn to use my hbo in unsupported countries

I know you don’t want this setup and it’s been mentioned before, but I will add another vote for a travel vpn router with the Apple TV. I travel full time and this is the setup I use. I tried the vpn dns some have suggested and it didn’t work as well. Only about half of my apps worked. With a vpn router they all work. I stay in Airbnb’s full time and I have had access to the apartment’s router in every one. So if you can afford the extra device I recommend it.

I know this is an older post but I found it searching for something else…. TV OS 17 will support third party vpn. So worst case, you have to hold out until then.

I would like to avoid that, but if there is no other possibility, it may be an option.

So what you mean is, I could use such a travel router without a SIM card, right? The router would have a VPN software installed and would just connect to the hotel Wifi and would just receive the traffic from the AppleTV it‘s connected to and would forward it to the hotel Wifi?

This doesn‘t sound plausible to me, because the travel router would have to access a VPN server in another country FIRST before forwarding the traffic to the hotel wifi after that, so how should it connect to the VPN router without an internet connection on its own, or am I missing something here?

Thanks, sounds fine to me as it would only include buying one additional cable and I would only need it for specific purposes and not all the time.

But do you get a good high definition resolution on your TV (significantly better than via mirroring over the Wifi), when streaming/mirroring from your Macbook via ethernet cable to your AppleTV?

And would this wired solution even be possible from iPhone or iPad to AppleTV with some adapter cable as preferably I would like to use my iPhone for that, if possible, so I can still continue using laptop and tablet while streaming.

Thanks for the information, that would be great.

Not with a TV, with an AppleTV (this small black streaming box from Apple, maybe 10x10x5cm). For some of the things outside of the AppleTV app on the AppleTV box I‘m interested in, I do have geoblocking issues, that‘s why I‘m asking. For example I‘d like to be able to watch football (soccer for americans) games in high definition on a TV with commentators in my native language among other things.

The AppleTV app on the AppleTV device is geo free, but streams from other apps on the AppleTV device are not necessarily geo free, and that‘s why I‘m asking.

For example I‘d sometimes like to watch football (soccer) and other things with native audio commentators in high-quality resolution on a TV.

Wait… firesticks have VPN apps?
