I have a Split Tunnel VPN (Wireguard) setup on my phone. Only traffic destined for my home network (10.20.0.0/22) is sent through the VPN. All other traffic is sent through the AT&T servers just as though there is no VPN involved. But if I attempt to use Android Auto while the VPN is active, AA refuses to connect and tells me I have to disable the VPN. I could almost understand requiring that AA traffic is not sent through the VPN. But it is COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE to tell me I can’t have the VPN running at all if I want to use AA.
I connect to an email server and home assistant through the firewall (among other services) and those can safely run in the background while I’m driving. The other services don’t need to actually be running while I’m driving (such as the connection to my file server). However, sometimes I’m not the one behind the wheel.
For example, I’m picking up my Mom from visiting my Aunt. Then we’ll have a 7 hour drive home. She’ll probably drive an hour or two. Because it’s MY CAR, my phone is the only one connected to the head unit in the car. We will be using the navigation system.
Wireguard allows you to whitelist Android auto in the settings. That’s what I had to do to get it to work.
Does anyone have a fix for Express VPN. This also winds me up!
I had this problem in the beginning when I used Android auto for the first time. I use adguard to block ads and it uses a VPN to do so. In the settings there is a way to ignore certain apps and all I had to do was set it to ignore Android auto
I’m currently using verizon digital secure VPN and it’s blocking android auto so I have to disable digital secure every time I get into my car. I’m using Samsung S24+ . Anyone know a fix for this?
Where in wireguard is this setting? I cannot find it on the Android app!
Thanks.
Thanks. I’ll try that tomorrow when I go out.
I’m also using Wireguard (Mullvad VPN) and enabled split tunneling for AA but it’s not working… I still fet the red picture that says that i should disable the VPN Connection? Can you help me? Apple Carplay is working without any problem with VPN Connection… This is ridiculous…
Tell express VPN to. Exclude. AA from using VPN. Split tunnelling

Open Wireguard, tap the name of the tunnel you want to change, tap the pencil, tap “All Applications”, exclude Android Auto, save it.
If it makes you feel any better, you even have to exclude Android Auto from Google’s VPN, though I think they have now fixed it and hard coded whitelisting as it doesn’t even list AA as excludable anymore.
Did you whitelist Android Auto?
I swear I tried that before! Just got it working, so thanks!
Thank you. That worked.
Appreciate your time.
I did… still not working

or is there any other google service i need to whitelist ?
