If I setup my FWG+ as a VPN server is each client limited by my upload speed? I think the answer is yes but there may be something I don’t understand about how it works.
When you VPN into your home like this
Phone —> VPN—> Firewalla
the traffic direction is really
Phone <— VPN <— Firewalla
(you are browsing the internet so data goes to your phone from home)
Above is “upload”
Yes. It’s why my 1200/35 mix makes it difficult to use the VPN full time when I’m out of the house. Very jealous of those with fast asymmetrical speeds.
When you are downloading from the VPN client, besides the network limit that you are on, your home upload speed will be the limiting factor.
It depends on how you set up the VPN client. I use WireGuard on a Pi, and I have 2 clients on my phone. One is a 100% connection and the second is a DNS and access to my servers, but my traffic flows over my phone’s connection.
It is quite intuitive that the upload speed on the server side is the same as the download speed on the client side (and vice versa). And if several clients is connecting to the host, naturally the max speed of the server is shared among all clients.
So if you have a demanding need for VPN speed, you better get ISP with symmetrical speed.
I had gig / 50 for a long time, they upped it to 250 and was way better but I got another ISP that brought fiber to my house so now I got gig/gig and it’s amazing. Hope you get something good soon
I got 500/500 fiber last week and I immediately started up a PC I was saving for a server and plan to setup VPN on my phone for when I travel
