Quick question. Dont want to make a ticket out of it. So yea. What are those p2p servers for? Is it a torrent thing? Do other servers not allow torrents or are there other p2p aplications that you can run through them? Yea.
Technically all paid servers allow P2P, some may reroute the traffic because the upstream provider doesn’t want it, but you won’t get disconnected.
They said that the P2P servers are optimized for P2P (no info about what exactly that means) and they are equipped with higher bandwidth to back the required traffic.
Maybe /u/protonvpn can elaborate a bit more on them?
P2P stands for peer to peer connections, that is most commonly used in torrent software to connect users ans share the files from their machines via net. P2P server category indicates that you can use torrents on those servers and download securely, Not all servers are willing to support P2P traffic thus this is a specific type of servers to use in specific cases where this P2P connection is required
Thanks a lot to everyone.
hello, thanks, i am grateful for the free protonvpn.
now, i got message “NO P2P TRAFFIC IS PERMITTED ON THIS SERVER” as detailed at https://protonvpn.com/support/p2p-vpn-redirection/.
my internet connection is a super slow 5Mbps, via a cellphone unlimited hotspot.
for sure, i am not torrenting, not sharing files, not uploading/download files.
95% of the traffic is streaming videos from two internet sources, both streaming at 480p
-– youtube
-– emby server hosted in hetzner cloud vm
could running tailscale trigger that p2p message?
You are correct, there’s not much to add to that. P2P traffic eats a lot of bandwidth and user intent to use the servers is often different - some want to simply browse, some want to stream content, others want to download files so it comes down to server optimization for all these different activities. And yes, we also cannot allow P2P with certain server providers.
Free server situation is similar due to available bandwidth on them - while we could allow P2P on these servers, a lot of users are using them and P2P traffic could potentially eat up all the bandwidth affecting overall connection speed.
I‘d suggest opening a new topic, it is more likely you will get an answer in that way than in a 4.5+ years old topic.
It could as example be windows udates, this is one of the common ones.
