What is going on with Proton VPN Lately?

  • Most (Canadian) servers have been nearly maxed out for several weeks now.
  • Selecting “Fastest” sometimes loads US servers.
  • Browser tabs fail to refresh “uh oh, something went wrong”, happens daily. As soon as I disconnect the VPN, everything is fine. I really don’t want to have to go back to PIA.

Proton Unlimited Customer since 2018.

Same, but with US servers. Slowness/latency, etc.

Did you report that to the support team? If yes, can you share the ticket numbers? If not, please do so.

Either directly through the app or through the contact form:

We have forwarded your feedback regarding the high load of our servers to the team for further investigation.

As for the other issue, are you experiencing it on specific websites, or is it happening regardless of the website you’re trying to visit? Contact us using the ‘Report an issue’ option in the app menu with more details (including the logs) so we can investigate further (How to report an issue in Proton VPN | Proton VPN).

Meanwhile, you can try changing the connection protocol (How to change VPN protocols or select Smart Protocol | Proton VPN) or using a different browser to see if the issue persists.

just a +1. it wont even connect to the server i set in my profile, sends me elsewhere. and that elsewhere is shitting the bed as well.

I just had this behavior about two weeks back on a previous US server that went on a few days and then the server disappeared/apparently was retired.

Now i choose another one from a different locale and its happening again.

I dont wanna be that guy, as i’m a new proton user so cant speak to their history as far as these things go, but i came from torguard (lack of split tunneling finally did me in) and never experienced this sort of thing.

maybe its a timing/luck thing but once is one thing, now twice in a short span.

disconnected for now as its even breaking my browser thats not routed through the vpn (which leads me to believe its their dns thats having issues)

I’m having issues where connecting via my profiles don’t work. Have been forced to use quick connect for a while now.

I have a potential solution, it requires adding a custom DNS.

Yes, making a report would definitely help.

Also, what OS are you using ? There are differences between OSes networking stacks, which lead to differences in Proton apps , which may lead to additional differences between them.

Additionally, is it happening on all web sites your are browsing or only a subset of them ?

I have noticed over the years that a lot of Americans prefer using Canadian servers due to a lack of trust in their own government.

Just to say this has only started happening with me on MacOS and iOS today, last 12-24hrs or so. Im in UK but I use Swiss servers mainly - even selected Fastest sends me back to UK and very slow speed.

I often find I can’t connect to some saved configurations, and in general proton vpn is sluggish. I mostly use Wireguard for improved speed, but it doesn’t help much.

MY base connection is around 300Mb/s with pings in the 10ms range. Proton VPN to the fastest server pings are often in 70s and speeds can crawl as low a 6Mb/s sometimes. It’s a real PIA having to server hop all the time to find a decent server.

I feel it’s been going downhill for the past year and half.

You’re not alone. All my 4 wireguard based Proton VPN connections are down for the count for the last 2-3 days as well, and I’m paying for a Family subscription.

I’ve contacted customer support over a month ago on this and their response to the issue hasn’t been great. Not saying they haven’t been responding, but their suggestions on the issue don’t seem to reflect what is going on.

I mayyyy have found the issue, and it’s Proton’s DNS service they’re using. If you are using Old Reddit and check your Account Activity you’ll likely see your IP address and service provider are wildly different than what ProtonVPN says. I added a custom DNS server (Cloudfare) and that actually seems to be solving the issue. I’m not having any issues loading into sites now and the IP address is being displayed properly as well.

I’ve been using ProtonVPN for the last two years and had no problems until about three weeks ago. Having major problems connecting to U.S. VPN servers. The App on Mac OS hangs, waiting to connect, and then times out. Real frustrating. I’ve opened a ticket and shipped over logs…etc, but I’m still getting the level 1 treatment. If I do get a connection, I try to keep it on as long as I can. I’m afraid to change servers…not good

Don’t trust anybody’s government.

I can’t say I trust the Canadian government that under the watch of that pos Trudeau fucked with the bank accounts of truckers protesting the government’s crown virus policies. Fucking garbage Trudeau and fucking garbage Canadian government.

Can you send us the ticket number please?

yea i just changed to a custom dns server until they resolve this. not ideal but when the alternative is disconnecting the vpn entirely or having no use of anything that relies on dns… well…
