I live in Iran, Which is a very restricted country. It censors half the info I want to get and I always have to have a vpn turned on.
Aside from that, I was just wondering what would my ISP do when they see me on the Darknet?
I’m not using Tor directly, but instead in Brave (The Private Window with Tor future thingy).
I have no idea on your local laws but I would look into them before using Tor. You should definitely use a bridge or if VPNs are not illegal in your country you should use a VPN before connecting.
Don’t Don’t Don’t use brave browser use tails or whonix with a usb stick, if Iran prohibits surfing the dark web you don’t wanna have proof in your device of any kind and yeah also use bridges using vpn can still notify your isp that you are using tor, that will get you in trouble
all they can see is that you are using tor
If you live in Iran, I would recommend you this.
Use a VPN when connecting to the network. This makes it harder for local authorities to detect that you are actually connected to the network. You can also use a Bridge, but in your case I would recommend a VPN. Just make sure it’s the right one.
Connect to the network through the Browser bundle, or through a dedicated tool like Tails or Whonix. For a beginner, I would actually recommend Whonix.
Do not use IOS or Android, and especially not Brave. This is not what I would do in a place like Iran.
If you feel the need, install Whonix on your local machine through VirtualBox, and install a VPN on the host. From there, launch Whonix through VirtualBox. By doing this, you’ll achieve some compartmentalization of your activities. If you think that the police might search your house, Tails might be the better option. This way, you’ll keep sensitive data off your local machine in case.
Make sure that IF you run Tor on your local machine, keep all drives encrypted with something like Veracrypt, or at least use Bitlocker. Remember, if you use Bitlocker, DO NOT save the decryption key, throw it away or dig it down somewhere. Another pitfall of using Bitlocker is hardware encryption, which is the default (from what I remember) and could possibly be worthless in the end. Make sure to change it to software encryption.
Use a bridge and use the TOR browser. I’ve heard Iran is not to nice when it comes to it’s crimes.
I wish you the best!
Are you able to access Tor from Iran?
Please tell me whether you can access torproject.org from Iran? If you cannot, then, usually it is a DNS block and you can circumvent it very easily by using Google DNS 8.8.8.8 or Cloudflare DNS 1.1.1.1. Once you access torproject.org, you can download the Tor browser.
I have never been to the Islamic Republic of Iran but I have been to other Muslim-majority countries like the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and Malaysia, both which do not ban Tor or VPNs.
I look forward to hear from you, so, I will know whether Iran blocks Tor or not. But I doubt they do but I await your confirmation.
Just out of curiosity, what are you trying to access that they’re blocking?..
Iran has a tendency to execute people so I would be careful
Probably publicly whip you then behead you
Not sure why people keep living there. Is there any restrictions to get out the country?
I would say before I stuck me neck out in a country that cuts heads off I would do everything in my power to know my Anon skills are beyond reproach before even attempting it and it better be worth the trouble if your pretending to have the skill the is a lot of documentation with tor and tails and everything you need to know more importantly learn how they catch people and always follow their improvements
As of Today VPNs aren’t illegal in my country… yet. So thanks for the tip!
Just a problem with your last statement:
How is it that an ISP can see what data you exchange through a VPN so that it can infer you’re using TOR?
Just be careful when downloading or using tails or whoonix. If you’re seen to use those you will attract suspicion, even more than using tor, especially from an administration like Irans.
You are right. Using tor with brave is very risky and nowhere near as secure as something like tails.
Using Tor will give you the same anonymity as a VPN. It might be even more. The only thing VPNs do change is if you have Tor prohibited in your country and can’t connect to it. Which I can see that Tor isn’t prohibited in my country… yet (meaning I can connect to Tor without a VPN or Bridge. I still dont get why people use vpns when they can use bridges. Doesnt make sense to me.) I still use bridges though for extra paranoia lmfao. Good advice though!
Yeah. I might start using Tails. That’s all I need anyway. It’s not like they’re gonna bust my door open and arrest me lmao. But I think if my ISP has seen me searching Tails and some other stuff so my name is probably underlined or highlighted in the list LOL
