Found this whilst browsing Reddit, I remember that the Luna app got taken off the store but so far it’s been the only thing that was able to stop YouTube ads (in the app) on non-jailbroken devices.
I see now that there is just a VPN profile instead of an app, presumably to get around the fact that the app got blocked.
My question is, is it possible for AdGuard to implement something like this? Even better if there could be some form of split tunnel functionality to enable users to select which apps go through this sort of VPN?
I’d feel more safer if someone like AdGuard offered a similar service over a small lesser known company…
I wish we could install these profiles in the AppleTV.
Did you try the vpn? Did it block YT ads?
Luna uses a root certificate to block those ads, they were also selling your data.
Their ad blocking in apps is soo much better than anything else that I don’t mind them selling what little of my unencrypted data they get. It’s like, Gmail is soo good at blocking spam, I don’t mind them harvesting my data; and, when I do mind, I use a foreign secure email provider. You know, someone is going to get your unencrypted data anyway, either your ISP or your VPN, so it’s a wash. Years ago it was possible to block iOS app ads locally but Apple didn’t like their own ads being blocked too so now we have to endure less secure methods.
Maybe set up an Android device running Luna VPN as your router?
Pine64 has RockPro64 board with 1 onboard Ethernet Adapter, plus buy 1 compatible PCIe Ethernet Adapter, then install Android+apps and set it up as a router.
I used it before it was renamed to Luna but between that time that it was Luna and when it was taken off the App Store, I was jailbroken so didn’t need it.
I haven’t had the chance to try this VPN yet today.
I’ve just ended up sideloading to get rid of ads entirely. The irony is that I would’ve paid for YouTube premium but can’t on a legacy gsuite account, and now Google are sunsetting that tier, less of a reason for me to pay anything to Google as I need to move my users elsewhere.
If only I could trust that the Android device is not calling home…
I used to use Luna. If you don’t know the reason it was taken off, it’s because they were harvesting user data
And you apparently don’t care about your privacy. Did you read the previous comment?
