I was seduced by the offer of a free VPN for pixel users, but I didn’t fully read the conditions and bought a pixel 6 pro, thinking it has 5 years updates so it would benefit from all what newer pixel phones will have too.
To my surprise, there’s no VPN for us, and it’s not even planned. Feels like an unfulfilled promise to me
The five years of updates is for the security updates, not necessarily features. A few will trickle down, but Google (and Samsung and Apple, etc.) are trying to sell new phones. There is no profit in passing features down to already sold phones.
If you want Google’s VPN on your Pixel 6 then unfortunately you will need a Google One subscription.
The VPN stuff came with Pixel 7.
The 5 years support and your expectation that it will bring new features to older devices is kinda your mistake really. Google doesn’t promise this and you shouldn’t buy a device expecting anything other that what it is when you purchase it.
It was never even mentioned as a feature for the Pixel 6 series. It was only for the Pixel 7 series onwards that the Google VPN was built into the device. If you pay for Google One, it’s the same VPN service anyway.
Yeah, I’m especially frustrated by this now that they’re closing the VPN on Google one. So I’m using a pixel 6 pro, only halfway through its life cycle, paid for a flagship phone, and been giving you money every month for storage and a VPN and you’re just cutting it and giving me nothing in return.
Feel like we should get a $20 Google Play credit at least or something.
I’m losing karma just by answering with my personal opinion, so I’ll stop commenting, I don’t know if people love Google blindly or of it’s a strategy to silence critics. But I gotta stop commenting: I lost 35 karma in a few minutes
Google immediately forgets older Pixels. All the features from Pixel 8 would work on Pixel 2. But the only way to drive more sales - introduce new feature with the new Pixel. And since people have attention span of a banana, it works long-term.
There is a benefit for sales, because people will know that when they buy a phone today, they will benefit even future features.
That’s why pixel is promising 5 year updates no? So it’s only half true.
