Why is someone trying to log into my account with different vpn locations?

I’ve already got a lot of stuff for security including 2FA so each attempt to failed, so I’m not super worried about them getting in, but I am genuinly confused as to why they keep changing their IP address.

They attempted to sign in to my microsoft account about 22 times in 2 days. Many of those attempts happened withing the same minute as other attempts, different parts of china was used 5 times for some reason, as well as various places all over the rest of the world. I don’t see how changing the location would help the hacker here.

If this is your personal Microsoft account:

This will stop it cold:

Create an alias for login purposes only. Designate this alias as the primary alias at:

then disable sign-in capability for the other aliases here:

You can still send and receive email from the old address. Keep the new alias secret. Do not use the new alias for anything except login.

When someone tries to login to your account, they will receive a message that the username does not exist. They can’t hack your account if they don’t know your username.

Be careful to not REMOVE your email address at the first screen. There you only want to create the new alias (click on add email) then make the new alias Primary (click on Make primary, NOT Remove).

Enable 2FA via Authenticator App.

Because it’s the internet. /s

That’s useful but do you have any idea why they keep changing their IP address with a VPN?

Most probably your email was found in a breach.

Check here: https://www.haveibeenpwned.com

Or they are guessing the email using some kind of bot.

I get that part, the part I don’t understand is why each separate attempt they use a VPN to change their IP address.

Like one attempt had an IP address in china, the next attempt had an IP address in Singapore, then next one has an IP in India and so on and so on.

Why do they specifically use a VPN to change their country IP address?

I also don’t know.

But I changed the login alias as above and since then I have not faced the problem.
