Would changing stock modem to improve internet speed?

Hi, just curious if changing the stock modem (Fiberhome) would improve the overall internet? I’m currently under a 200mbps plan, but normally receiving around 110-140Mbps. If yes, may I ask for your recommendation for fiber modem? Thank you!!

In my experience, speed can improve and overall performance (connecting several devices) improves when using a router separate from what the ISP provides. Depending on the size of the area you can go with one wifi 6 router or a mesh router system for multi floor houses

Short answer is NO. Your bandwidth is capped by your provider in their Edge Devices. So, even using your own router will not increase bandwidth.

VPN may be your friend in some instances, though. If the provider is throttling some types of traffic (p2p, torrent), then using VPN will mask this type of traffic from the provider, theoretically bypassing throttling.

Try several types of speedtests like FAST, OOKLA, MLAB, etc. Ensure no other device is downloading or using bandwidth, for accurate results for your speedtest. Try using different types of devices for speedtests also.

Hope that helps.

There’s a lot of factors to consider why you’re not getting the full 200mbps. If you’re on Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi can also be the bottleneck or maybe you’re downloading from a server with limited bandwidth or there is a congestion along the way. But, you cannot change the modem that your ISP gives you as it is tied to your account and I’m not sure if you even own the device. Also, I don’t think that fiber modems if you can find one you can buy online use the same specifications, wavelengths, etc. so it’s possible what you buy won’t be interoperable. I don’t think that there are rules imposed by the likes of NTC for the ISPs to follow such that other fiber modems are interoperable.

If we’re talking wifi connection, then yes. Since there might be significant difference in technology between the stock router vs a 3rd party one like having wifi 6. Havent really tried switching modem since we’re using mesh at home.

Unless your existing modem is damaged. Don’t think there would be drastic difference at all.
